1977 Hamer DC Sunburst - ex Martin Barre

Description

A hugely significant 1977 Hamer Sunburst, serial number 7-0062, presented to Martin Barre by Paul Hamer and used extensively with Jethro Tull through one of the band’s great late-’70s periods.

This is an exceptional guitar, notable both as an early Hamer Sunburst and as a verified Martin Barre instrument. Offered on Martin’s behalf, it includes his signed authentication as well as the Jethro Tull Bursting Out Live box set CD and DVD, featuring their Madison Square Garden performance.

Martin first met Paul Hamer in the early 1970s and bought a number of vintage guitars from him over the years. In 1977, Paul attended Jethro Tull’s Chicago show and presented Martin with one of the first Hamer Sunburst models, complete with a special inscription to the reverse of the backplate. That inscription remains present and reads: “Hamer USA Sunburst, no. 7 0062 Presented to Martin Barre with grateful appreciation 11-16-77”.

According to Martin, he loved the guitar immediately and it became his main live and studio instrument for many years. He states that it was used on all tracks of Jethro Tull’s Heavy Horses album and featured on the live Tull recording Bursting Out, touring with him around the world over the following years.

As an early Hamer, the guitar has real historical importance in its own right. These first Sunburst models helped establish Hamer as a serious boutique American guitar maker, combining vintage-inspired build quality with a more modern, road-ready feel. This example’s direct connection to Martin Barre, Paul Hamer and Jethro Tull makes it far more than just a rare early Hamer; it is a genuine piece of rock history.

An exceptional and highly collectible artist-owned Hamer with impeccable provenance, authenticated directly by Martin Barre and representing a significant period in Jethro Tull history. For collectors of notable artist instruments, early Hamer guitars, or Martin Barre/Jethro Tull memorabilia, this presents a rare and compelling opportunity.
