1970 Gibson SG Standard, Cherry

Description

A superb 1970 Gibson SG Standard, previously owned by our pal Chris from The Heavy.

This is a very clean, original example of the iconic big guard, Lyre vibrola model commonly associated with Angus Young. It presents very well overall and is exceptionally clean for its age.

It has no volute and no “Made in USA” stamp, placing it in that earlier transitional period before those features became standard. The 3-piece Mahogany neck is slim at the nut but has some real depth and a nicely rounded shoulder, so it avoids the overly narrow or squeezed feel that some Gibson necks from this period can have. It measures 40mm at the nut, with a depth of 22.9mm at the 1st fret and a substantial 28.3mm at the 12th. The original frets and nut remain in place, and overall it feels excellent to play.

Chrome hardware includes the engraved Lyre trem, ABR-1 bridge with nylon saddles and Kluson double-line, double-ring tuners. Electrically, it retains its unopened Patent sticker “T-Top” humbuckers with slot head baseplate screws. The pickups read 8.14k at the bridge and 7.88k at the neck, making them a little hotter than earlier Gibson humbuckers and very well suited to the SG’s natural bite and attack.

Tonally, it's a very versatile guitar giving you everything from warm, punchy and articulate cleans to upper-mid bite and growl, with and a strong, vocal lead sound when driven. The bridge pickup has real cut, while the neck retains warmth and clarity without getting woolly. It is a superb rock guitar, but still has enough dynamic range and musicality to cover far more ground.

All in all, this is a fantastic 1970 Gibson SG Standard from a very cool, transitional period for the model. Comes complete with a purple plush-lined Gibson hard case.
