1966 Fender Mustang, Blue

Description

A very cool 1966 Fender Mustang, finished in Blue with attractive yellowing to the finish in places and loads of classic mid-’60s Fender vibe. This is such a great colour that never fails to age well!

Introduced in 1964 as part of Fender’s student-model range, the Mustang quickly became far more than that. With its short scale feel, offset body, punchy single coil pickups and quirky switching arrangement, it has gone on to become a favourite with players looking for something immediate, lively and full of character.

This example is in very good overall condition, with a few knocks and dings as you would expect, but nothing that detracts from what is a particularly attractive and very usable vintage Mustang. The finish has aged nicely, with some lovely yellowing in places that gives the guitar a great look.

The neck is stamped JAN 66 and has a really nice medium/chunky C profile that feels nice and full in the hand. It has a dark veneer rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, an excellent refret and a changed nut. The nut width measures 40.9mm, with a neck depth of 21.7mm at the 1st fret and 23.2mm at the 12th. Weight is a comfortable 3.25kg.

Hardware includes the correct F-stamp tuners with plastic buttons, correct Mustang bridge with Fender's "Dynamic Vibrato" unit catering to all of your vibrato needs. The electronics are nicely intact with two correct grey bottom pickups, reading 5.66k in the neck and 5.73k in the bridge. The wiring all looks stock, and the pots are correct, with one legible code dating to week 7 of 1966. The bridge pickup switch is a little loose, but everything is functioning as it should.

Tonally, this is a really good one. The pickups have a clear, chimey single coil voice with a very Strat-like quality at times, but with the added snap and attack that Mustangs do so well. It is percussive, lively and great for choppy rhythm playing, with plenty of bite and definition.

A lovely, clean and great-playing 1966 Fender Mustang with the right look, strong originality and excellent vintage Fender tone. Comes with a non-original hard case.
