1962 Gibson ES-335TDC, Cherry Red

Description

A superb, desirable, factory stoptail 1962 Gibson ES-335TDC, finished in Cherry, complete with a fantastic set of original PAF humbuckers and that cool “Mickey Mouse ear” look.

Cherry stop-tail 335's from this period are true classics of Gibson design, and this example has all the right ingredients: great colour, original PAFs, a comfortable neck and a wonderful chimey, open tone.

The Cherry finish remains vibrant with minimal fade, and the guitar presents very well overall. The main point to note is a large area of clear overspray to the back. There is also a pleasingly worn-in feel to the rear of the neck, giving it that silky smooth quality that makes vintage guitars so inviting to play.

The slim depth neck measures 42.2mm at the nut, with a depth of 20.3mm at the 1st fret and 22mm at the 12th allowing plenty of access up top. The original frets are still in place, with the binding nibs retained, and there is plenty of fret height remaining. The nut also appears to be correct. At 3.89kg, it balances well and feels reassuringly comfortable in use.

Tuners are the correct single line, double ring Klusons. The bridge currently fitted is a non-branded ABR-1, though the original nickel ABR-1 bridge is retained. The stoptail is also changed (it comes with an additional repro tailpiece and studs) and it has a repro Armstrong black pickguard. Black reflector knobs are correct and it has the correct non-“Union Made” orange label.

The original PAF pickups remain in place, with cover solder appearing intact and PAF stickers which fluoresce correctly under blacklight. The loom appears correct, the solder looks good, and the guitar retains its Black Beauty capacitors.

The pickups are beautifully balanced, reading 8.05k at the bridge and 7.61k at the neck. They deliver that classic short-magnet PAF voice: clear, chimey, open and articulate, with plenty of warmth and bite when required.

All in all a very desirable early ’60s stop-tail ES-335 with original PAFs. A few changed parts and some clear overspray to the back help keep the price down, and overall this is an excellent opportunity to own a truly great model from one of the most sought-after periods of Gibson semi-hollow production.

The guitar comes with its original ES-335TDC hang tag and a non-original vintage Guild hard case.
