1964 Gibson SG Special, Cherry

Description

Santana at Woodstock and Townshend at Leeds, reason enough to take a look at this 1964 Gibson SG Special.

Designed as a student model, a step up from the Junior, the Special had taken many guises since its introduction in 1955. By 1963 the guitar had lost all connection with its Les Paul heritage but was popular with players such as Toni Iommi and Robbie Krieger who found the solid guitar the perfect foil, lightweight and powerful.

This guitar is really nice. The colour has faded just a tiny bit to where it looks classic 60's SG but not faded too much. There are a few minor dings here and there, but these do not detract from the overall look of the instrument.

The heel is perfect with no cracks, repairs or stress marks. There's some nice checking but no damage. The headstock has a few marks but nothing too serious. It has previously had Grovers fitted but at the moment it sports repro single line strip Klusons.

It has had a decent refret and a new nut and some very minor touch ups on the headstock. There are also some capo marks on the back of the neck.

It has the classic 1964 medium chunky Gibson neck which is similar to a 59 profile and pretty sought after. It is also avery nice light weight of just x.xKg

The plastics are in good shape, the pickguard hasn’t warped or cracked and the pickup covers are all intact. The truss rod cover is original. The tailpiece has been replaced with an aged repro type.

Electronically everything looks correct. All solder joints are untouched and date codes are under the solder.

The guitar comes with a correct hard case which is probably original to the guitar.

Sonically this guitar is so much more than a ‘student’ guitar. The neck is full bodied and clear with the bridge delivering that raw tone that we just itch for in an SG. A great rock n roll machine. The neck is so comfortable being a classic profile and reassuringly full, just inviting you to play anywhere.

We love SGs here at ATB Guitars and to have a Special is always a treat. A must for any collection.
