1964 Fender Stratocaster, Sunburst

Description

A desirable early ’64 spec, 3-tone sunburst, spaghetti logo Strat, with little fading and wonderful vibrancy to the finish. The pronounced red and dark perimeter to this Sunburst is just stunning!

This one is an all-rounder that will appeal to many vintage Strat players and collectors. It’s been played over the years but remains fairly clean with little fade to the finish, it has a fantastic ‘C’ neck profile, has the ever popular Rosewood board/clay dot, mint guard, spaghetti logo, 3-tone sunburst combination and the trio of black bottom single coil pickups are hard to beat!

Starting from the top, this example retains its spaghetti logo/3 Pat decal, single string tree and single line Kluson deluxe tuners. The nut appears replaced but it retains its original frets and the thick Rosewood veneer fingerboard is dark and oily, punctuated nicely with the clay dot markers with narrow 12th fret spacing of the period. The neck is stamped JAN64 and has the correct router template holes.

The body wears its correct 3-tone sunburst finish with nail holes visible and the correct paint stick mark in the neck pocket. The plastics are original, the mint guard has shrunk a little but resisted cracking, and the single ply trem cover is correct albeit with enlarged holes to ease string access.

Under the guard the original shield is present, and we have a very fine set of black bottom single coil pickups with correct cloth wire and masking tape. Pots are all Stackpole with visible codes dating to week 3 of 1964, and the switch is the correct 3 position type. Hardware ticks all the boxes too and overall this is exactly what we’d expect to see.

Tonally the guitar delivers a very nicely balanced, classic black bottom pickup Strat tone with a strong output. Bell-like neck pickup sounds, spiky chime and attack from the bridge pickup and a nicely balanced middle position great for choppy rhythm playing and chord work.

Overall a very nice example of a classic looking Strat from the desirable pre-CBS era. Complete with the original case, ashtray, tremolo arm and cable.
