1980 Fender Lead II, Black

Description

The 1980 Fender Lead II is one of those under-the-radar gems that perfectly blends vintage Fender character with something a little different. Finished in black with an alder body and maple neck topped with a rosewood fingerboard, it’s got a stripped-down, workhorse appeal that sets it apart from the usual Strat and Tele crowd.
This example is completely original and has lived a well-played life, carrying plenty of honest wear that gives it real presence - elbow wear through the finish, buckle rash around the contour, and the kind of dings and scrapes that you just can’t fake. It feels lively in the hands, and overall is a reminder of why so many players reach for well-played-in instruments.
The neck is a highlight: nicely rounded at the first position and tapering beautifully as you climb up, it’s comfortable and fast without being too slim. Acoustically it rings with plenty of resonance, and plugged in it really comes alive. The twin Strat-style single coils, controlled by a three-way switch and an out-of-phase option, deliver tones that range from sparkling clarity to a biting, fierce attack—perfect for cutting through a mix.
Fender introduced the Lead series in 1979 as a more affordable line, with three variations: the single-humbucker Lead I, the twin-humbucker Lead III, and this Lead II with two single coils. Produced until 1983, they never achieved the fame of the Stratocaster or Telecaster, but today they represent some of the best vintage value around. This is a cool, vibey example with bags of character, ready to be played hard once again.
The guitar comes housed in a non-original hard case.
