1967 Fender Custom Telecaster, Sunburst

Description

A seriously good-looking, rare, double bound 1967 Fender Custom Telecaster, finished in Sunburst with honest, natural wear that looks perfect on this model. As one of the rarer Telecaster incarnations these are much harder to find particularly in the UK, and given their desirability they naturally command a higher price than the standard model of the period. This example is incredibly lightweight, resonant and a joy to play... and to look at!

The finish has aged beautifully, with plenty of buckle wear to the back, forearm wear and dings to the top, nicely yellowed binding and a smooth, played-in feel to the neck. An honest/authentic patina that only comes from decades of use, and given the way it plays and sounds it's no wonder this has been used extensively over the years.

The serial number dates to 1967, while the neck is stamped OCT 66 and both CTS pots date to week 13, 1966. The neck has been refretted and the nut changed.. It has a lovely worn feel in the hand as you'd expect, and overall it plays very well. The tuner holes have been professionally plugged and re-drilled; an excellent job barely noticeable. The original double-line Klusons have been reinstated and function well.

Hardware includes the correct bridge and threaded saddles. The input jack has been changed, with the original retained in the case and it has an added cap for treble bleed. The pickups read 6.36k at the bridge and 5.13k at the neck. The neck pickup presents well, while tone of the bridge pickup solder eyelets looks disturbed. It retains the correct white string but inconsistent blackening suggests it has likely been removed at some stage.

Tonally, it has everything you want from a good mid/late-’60s Tele. The bridge has plenty of bite, attack and clarity, while the neck pickup is warmer and rounder without losing definition. Playability is excellent thanks to a very comfortable neck profile, a good refret and a really smooth feel in the hand.

A fantastic-looking 1967 Custom Telecaster with genuine play wear, and loads of personality! Not a museum piece, but looking all the better for it... this is exactly the kind of guitar that will stand out in any collection, and one that you won't want to put down!
