1961 Vox AC-30/4, Fawn - One Owner!

Description

A rare and desirable, 1961 Westrex made Vox AC-30/4 for your delectation. What's more this particular example has been owned by the same owner from new who bought it in 1961 from Frank Hessy's Music Shop in Liverpool! (more about this later).

Introduced in 1958 at the request of Hank Marvin, the AC-30 would go on to be a touchstone of guitar tone, gracing stages all over the world.

This amp has had a life as you can see from the pictures... The fawn vinyl  is free of tears and any real signs of wear and is totally original. This is quite a feat as the vinyl is quite thin and susceptible to tearing. The grill cloth has worn a little but is not too damaged and is original. Amazingly all three handles appear to be original too which in itself is pretty rare.

This was bought in Liverpool, England in 1961 by a young Michael Gilligan. Michael Gilligan was a feature of the Irish Showband circuit during its heyday in the late 50s and early 60s, playing with the Blue Aces and The Royal Showband, touring the country and even playing the Royal Albert Hall. The popularity of the showbands was such at the time that musicians were earning substantially more than the average wage which meant they could afford the imported American instruments and equipment.

Michael bought this this amp along with with a Gretsch 6120 which we sold last year - you can see it here.

It became his constant companion and when he moved back to Liverpool in 1963 he brought it with him and gigged it until recent ill health forced him to stop playing.

As show bands had to look good and by the time the late 60's and 70's came along everyone was using black Tolex equipment and fawn just looked out of date so Michael painted the cabinet with black water based emulsion. Most of this has been removed during its recent restoration but you can still see it was there.

He also added a foot switch by drilling a 5th hole in the top panel (very neatly). This has now been reversed and put back to original wiring spec.

It has spent the last two years being carefully restored by Geoff Pryce - a tech who used to work for Real World Studios in Wiltshire. It is back to spec, fully up and running and to quote Geoff - 'this is the best AC-30 I have ever heard!' He should know, having worked on and heard quite a few over the years.

The original Haddon transformers are still present which is very nice and pretty important..!

Shipping quoted is a guess and will vary a lot depending on the country it is sold to.

This amp has an amazing tone, very evocative of the period with plenty of headroom and a beautiful crunch when wound up.

Anyone searching for that true JMI period tone need look no further. A great sounding amp that is the probably the most desirable variant of the AC-30. It would be madness to walk away....
