1976 Gibson Les Paul Custom, Black - ex John Squire

Description

A landmark piece of British rock history, this 1976 Gibson Les Paul Custom was previously owned by John Squire, guitarist, songwriter, and founding member of the Stone Roses—one of the most influential and innovative bands to emerge from the UK’s late-’80s/'90s alternative scene.

This is the very guitar used by John Squire to perform “Love Spreads”—arguably one of the Stone Roses’ most iconic tracks—between 2012 and 2017 during their massive reunion era. Signed by John on the top, this Les Paul Custom was one of his favoured stage instruments and became closely associated with his expressive slide work on that song. Few guitars are as intimately connected to the Roses’ resurgence and their lasting legacy.

The guitar itself is a classic mid-’70s Les Paul Custom, featuring gold hardware, an ebony fingerboard with block inlays, and Nashville bridge. It’s finished in sleek black, with all the presence and punch that these Norlin-era Customs are known for—weighty, resonant, and built for touring.

Documentation and provenance included in the sale are as photograped - A personal signed letter of verification from John Squire, verification from John’s longtime guitar tech, Martin Herbert, photographic evidence and video footage showing John using the guitar live during the band’s reunion tours.

The Stone Roses were the defining voice of the Madchester movement, fusing psychedelia, dance rhythms and raw rock energy. Their influence paved the way for bands like Oasis, Blur, and Primal Scream to name a few, and when they reformed in 2012, they sold over 250,000 tickets in under 10 minutes—a testament to the enduring love for the band.

This guitar is a true artefact of UK music culture. For collectors and fans alike, this is a rare opportunity to own a key piece of Madchester and Britpop-era history. An incredibly cool guitar, made even more special by the hands that played it.
