Description

“The Flip-Top” Studio Legend...

Widely regarded as one of  the greatest bass amps ever built, the Ampeg B-15NF is a true icon of electric bass tone. Known as the “Flip-Top”, this handwired classic from Ampeg’s Linden, New Jersey workshop defined the sound of countless Motown, Stax, and jazz recordings throughout the 1960s and ’70s and remains the studio standard to this day.

Powered by a pair of 6L6GC tubes, the B-15 delivers around 25 watts of warm, round, and exceptionally articulate tone. Its hallmark is a rich, full-bodied low end with smooth midrange definition and sweet, musical compression when pushed. The single 15" CTS speaker (in the classic double-baffle cabinet) provides the perfect match — tight yet deep, with vintage warmth that records beautifully.

This actual 1966 Ampeg B-15NF Serial Number: 030*** is in exceptional condition, full working order and sounds amazing. Very clean blue chequered vinyl cabinet with minimal wear, original CTS 15” speaker, original dolly, latches work as they should with no issues. Just an amazing Ampeg amp.

The 1966 B-15NF represents the pinnacle of this amplifier’s evolution during the 1960s vintage era. The Ampeg B-15 introduced in 1960 was replaced by the B-15N with separate Baxandall Bass and Treble control in 1961.This Baxandall tone control, frequently used in Hi-Fi equipment was a clear differentiator to its competitors. In 1962

Ampeg updated the B-15N and introduced their famous blue check vinyl covering to their entire amp line up. In mid-1965 they introduced the B-15NF with its fixed bias tubes, single-baffle cabinet with the more robust CTS 15” speaker. The blue checked vinyl remained a feature until mid-1967 when smooth black Tolex was introduced – marking the end to this vintage era.

Everything is here with this B-15NF; the lucite light up logo, the chrome, Ampeg logo on the front of the single baffled cabinet. The pots are dated to late 1965 as is the original CTS speaker. The filter capacitors and a couple of resistors have been “sympathetically” replaced and there is some spotting on the chrome – to be expected on a 60-year-old amplifier. Most importantly of all is that its sounds fantastic. This amp doesn’t disappoint in terms of sound or looks.

As a USA manufactured amplifier it runs on 120V and requires a step-down transformer to operate at UK voltages.
