1957 Gretsch Duo Jet 6128, Black + OHSC

Description

Here’s a properly cool vintage Gretsch - a 1957 Duo Jet 6128 in Black, and one of the nicer, all-original examples we’ve had in a while. If you ask us, this is the Gretsch model to own: sleek, vibey, and bursting with golden-era character. It comes complete with its original 'salt-and-pepper' Gretsch hard case and features the spec that marks the end of one era and the beginning of another for Gretsch solidbodies.

By 1957, the Duo Jet was undergoing a few key changes. Earlier models featured DeArmond pickups, large block inlay, followed by “humptop” inlays. In late ’57/early '58 they transitioned to smaller “thumbprint” inlays - as seen here - and by 1958, most examples were also shipping with Gretsch’s new Filter’Tron humbuckers and a roller bridge. This example keeps it classic with a pair of excellent sounding DeArmond single-coils, Melita bridge, G-cutout tailpiece and the T-roof Gretsch logo.

The sound is everything you’d want from a DeArmond-era Jet: bright, punchy, and clear with loads of dynamic range and bite, but with enough warmth to cover jazz, blues, or rootsier material with ease. The semi-solid body (chambered mahogany with a Nitron plastic top) gives it that unique Gretsch resonance and tone - snappy and percussive with lots of character.

The guitar is all original and all hardware is present and correct including the Grover Sta-Tite open-back tuners, G arrow control knobs and floating Melita bridge.

Cosmetically it's in very good condition and it doesn't appear to have seen much use over the years. The finish has a few dings to the top, particularly underneath the bridge and the photos show but otherwise it's a fine example that wears its age very well!

If you're after a no-nonsense, pure vintage Gretsch with tone for days and the look to match, this 1957 Duo Jet is the real deal. The perfect intersection of rock ’n’ roll cool, historic significance, and top-tier playability/tone. One of the most iconic electric guitars of the '50s—and we think one of the best sounding too!
