1964 Gretsch Country Gentleman, Walnut

Description

Double-mute Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman from 1964, retaining all of the classic period appointments that define Gretsch’s flagship hollowbody.

It features the distinctive T-roof headstock logo and the original “Chet Atkins Country Gentleman” plaque with serial number, along with gold plated Grover "butterbean" tuners, zero fret, Ebony fingerboard inlaid with Gretsch’s signature thumbprint markers. The maple neck leads into a hollow maple body with painted f-holes, fitted with Gretsch’s floating bar bridge and a gold-plated, Gretsch-branded Bigsby tailpiece.

Pickup configuration on this example is typical of models from this year, with a Filter’Tron at the bridge and a Super’Tron at the neck, offering a wide palette of classic Gretsch tones. The guitar is also features the factory double-mute system and retains the original back pad.

Condition-wise, the guitar shows honest age and wear consistent with a vintage Gretsch of this era. There is visible greening and corrosion to the gold plating, most noticeably on the Gretsch G-arrow knobs and on one side of the Super’tron, with the switches also showing some greening. As is common with vintage Gretsch instruments, binding rot is present, most pronounced around the body cutaways, with some binding loss to the rear lower bout. More generally, there is binding discolouration, shrinkage and degradation throughout, typical of the model, but important to note. Both strap buttons are also bent.

Nut measures 41.4mm, with a neck depth of 21.4mm at the first fret and 27.4mm at the twelfth, giving a comfortable feel in the hand.

Overall, a good example with plenty of vintage character, and the unmistakable Country Gent look! Comes complete with original hard case and Gretsch hang tag.
