A stellar, factory stoptail example of one of Gibson’s most iconic models from a golden era of production. This example is all original besides two small screws added to the headstock, likely in order to accommodate a custom truss rod cover. Everything else, right down to the wiring, hardware, and finish is correct and the overall condition is excellent!

Finished in a beautifully aged and nicely faded three-tone Sunburst, the laminate Maple top, back, and sides exhibit a nice patina and subtle checking that only decades of natural ageing can produce. The one-piece Mahogany neck sports the desirable medium ’64 profile as favoured by Clapton—more substantial than the slim ’60s taper but still fast and ergonomic. The dark Rosewood fingerboard is adorned with small block inlays, the frets and nut are original and overall this one plays great! It retains the original Kluson Deluxe (single line/Double ring) tuners that function well, and the headstock bears the classic “Gibson” logo and crown inlay.

Electronics include a pair of original Patent Number humbuckers; essentially short magnet PAFs, known for their clarity, warmth, and dynamic response. The original pots, caps, and switch function perfectly, delivering everything from articulate jazz cleans to bold, singing overdrive. Coupled with the original nickel, wired ABR-1 bridge, nylon saddles, stop tailpiece this one ticks all the boxes as both a fantastic instrument and an excellent collector grade piece.

'64 is a golden year for the 335 with factory stoptail models commanding high prices, in part due to their association with Eric Clapton (albeit with his being Cherry.) The neck profile fits like a glove, the tone from the Pat No. humbuckers is sublime, and the faded Sunburst look on this example is a thing of beauty. This is a true vintage gem, and an inspiring instrument to play! Comes complete with the original black Lifton case with gold interior lining.
