1956 Gibson ES-175DN + HSC

Description

Gibson archtop and a P-90 pickup is probably the perfect combination, a partnership that set the bar for amplified guitar tone throughout much of the 50’s and remains so influential. Introduced in 1949 as a mid level archtop, the ES-175's all laminate construction meant that costs could be kept down and also is noteworthy for being the first Kalamazoo design to feature a Florentine cutaway. The two pickup D model indication was introduced in 1953. The Blonde finish could be ordered at an additional cost, in 1955 that woudlhave been $280 with a sunbusrt setting you back $265.

As you can see from the photos, the guitar itself is in good  shape. The top, back and sides show some wear in particular the forearm section and on the back. This is not extensive and the lacquer hasn't faded too much wither. There doesn't seem to be any structural damage.

The neck is where the most work has been carried out. A previous owner has had the neck shaved. This has been well done and actually yields a neck that feels more akin to an early 60s Gibson. The strangest thing is that at the same time the owner asked for the headstock to be reshaped. This is odd but must have have sense at the time. As such the neck and headstock have been refinished. The neck has been refretted and though these show some signs of wear, there is plenty of lif left in them. The rosewood bridge and pickup covers are original

The tailpiece is a later chrome example and there has been another style of tailpiece fitted at some stage as is evident by the additional holes and the plugging of the end pin. Knobs are original reflector knobs from the mid 60’s. An additional strap button has been added at the heel. There are no breaks.

The electrics look to be all correct. .

The guitar comes hardshell case

Tonally, this guitar is quite lively. As you’d expect, it’s loud acoustically, exhibiting a pleasing woody tone which comes across when amplified. Both pickups work well together and bring out the character of the guitar, taking you from a warm, rounded sound to something altogether more raucous. .

In our opinion, a very cool and affordable 175 if you do not mind a slightly slimmer neck and headstock. we bet you won’t finder a cheaper blonde, 50’s 175 out there…
