Holy grail realised by Gibson's Historic Series with finishing touches by Mr Tom Murphy...
When the second mortgage won’t quite stretch to a real one, let the Gibson Custom Shop fill that hole with this 2016 Tom Murphy aged Gibson True Historic 1959 Les Paul Standard
Gibson’s legacy stems ostensibly, with regards to solid body guitars, from a relatively narrow time window. The demand has reached legendary proportions in recent years with the company itself turning to its past again and again in search of that magic formula to feed the craving. This guitar represents the fanatical level to which the Custom Shop at Gibson has gone to replicate the 59 Les Paul.
You could consider this a ‘Closet Classic’ guitar as the relicing job, done by the famed Tom Murphy, is light and subtle. The lacquer checking looks authentic and there are a few bumps and dinks on the body but nothing particularly heavy. The Vintage Lemon burst is nicely done evoking the look of Peter Green or Paul Kossoff’s famous guitars.
The finish has been wet-sanded to keep it thin and more authentic. The same techniques have been applied to the neck which has been hand sanded again to feel more like the original. The edges of the fretboard have been rolled and there is an air of care to the whole process of building this guitar.
Details such as the thin veneer to the headstock and the material used and shape of the plastic pickup surrounds are just a few of the things that make this guitar so special. The fretboard is in great shape and apart from the relicing this guitar is a new.
The guitar comes with its original hardshell case which itself has been reliced.
Tonal this guitar plays and sounds like a Les Paul with the lighter, airier sonic qualities that you’d expect from a late 50’s PAF equipped guitar. The ‘59 neck profile is comfortable and familiar and the the guitar doesn’t fell too heavy, particularly as the wood for those properties.
Here is a guitar that gets you as close as possible to the holy grail without the huge price tag or being called Joe.
