2014 Gibson Historic Collection 1959 Les Paul Standard. One of the great years of the RI Les Pauls.
As intriguing a story as any that pepper the guitar market, the ongoing saga of the Gibson Custom Shop’s struggle with recreating the much lorded ‘59 Les Paul has made these guitars subject to as heated a debate as their inspiration. This guitar from 2014 presents a snapshot of the ongoing development that went into the short lived True Historic range and is considered by many to be a one of the high watermarks of the series. This was just before the expensive True Historic series and most people will tell you, 2013 and 2014 were some of the finest years you can get for one of these.
Featuring hide glued bonding for both the neck joint and fingerboard, the Custom Shop was working its way back into the traditional methods that had been forsaken for a more commercially viable approach. The top carve and neck profile were also hand finished with the binding being rolled for a more authentic feel.
Aniline dies were utilised to achieve a more accurate finish with this example being particularly vibrant one. The hand finished wet sanding process was another nod to the past and goes a long way to achieving the accuracy that the Custom Shop were striving for.
Original plastics were analysed at a molecular level and the reproductions were made to an authentic vintage design as were the pickup covers.
As you can see from the pictures this guitar is in stunning condition, well cared for with a multifaceted top highlighted by its iced tea finish. It is in just about MINT condition and includes all the candy you see pictured.
This particular guitar, serial number 9 41833, was considered by the keen eyes at Thomann to be so gorgeous looking they actually photographed it and used it on their magazine ads at the time (see pics).
As you’d expect nothing has been changed and hardware is in great shape.
The guitar feels and plays excellently and at 4kgs is a nice comfortable weight considering its more traditional construction. The Custom Buckers deliver that classic PAF tone with that ‘Tele on steroids’ sound in the bridge and the smooth creamy neck position that just sings.
Stunning guitar that sounds as good as it looks. Grab it whilst you still can.
