A stunning, New Old Stock 1982 Fender ‘Dan Smith’ Standard Stratocaster should do the trick.

Out of the mirky depths of the late 70’s CBS period came new light and a change of fortunes for Fender. New blood was brought in by then the directors of Fender-CBS in the form of William (Bill) Schultz, John McLaren, and Dan Smith. It was Smith that put the effort in to turn things around for the company, revamping the basic production Stratocaster along the lines of the pre-CBS guitars, 4 bolt necks, body end truss rod adjustment and more accurate dimensions. These elements had been seen as early as the 25th anniversary model of 1979 but it was in 1981 that things started to turn around. The standard produced between 1981 (formally introduced to the public at the Janyuary NAMM of 1982) and 1983 came to be known as the Dan Smith Stratocaster amongst players and collectors even though his name never appeared on the guitar.

So, this guitar came to use as new. The polystyrene that the guitar is pictured with is the shipping packaging that the guitar would have been sent in from the factory. It seems that nothing has been lost either from within. The guitar comes wrapped in a cotton jacket, one piece for the body and another for the neck. This is then packaged with brown paper and the foam in the moulded part of the box. With it comes the original strap, lead and other documentation all still in their plastic bag. This is then all packed in a cardboard box like the day it arrived.

As a result, this guitar shows no sign of any use. The gloss finish is unblemished and the Sienna Sunburst looks stunning over the ash body. The neck too has wonderful gloss finish and is untouched. The plastics look perfect as you expect.

A feature of the Standard Stratocaster was the then new X-1 pickup in the bridge that was wound slightly hotter than its fellows.

The guitar plays very well for a new guitar (hehe!). Certainly delivers the Strat tones that you’ve been hankering after. Having said that, we have played this very carefully so as not to diminish that new vibe

Fresh out of the box all the way from 1982 you too would look good if you’d slept for 37 years wrapped in cotton. A cool piece of Fender history.
