Mega rare and ultra pretty 1974 Fender Stratocaster in Custom Colour Lake Placid Blue. Complete with original tags, original sales receipt and case candy...
Here is something you do not fall over every day. A mega rare, original Custom Colour 1974 Fender Stratocaster in a most fetching original Lake Placid Blue…
It has the correct case and this one also has the original sales receipt from 1974, original hang tag, inspection report and even the original CBS guarantee card, all with the correct matching serial number. Gosh!
Unless you fancied olympic white or black, custom colour Fender Strats and Teles were rare things to see by the early/mid 70’s. With CBS firmly holding the corporate reigns, trying to order a real custom colour Strat back then involved a lot of patience on the customers part as it seemed as if CBS were only really interested in churning out stock items by the many, many dozen so to find a genuine, rare custom colour from this period can be a pretty difficult task.
This one is in nice condition, it does have a few small dings here and there on the body and the maple neck has a wear pattern on the bass side that looks like it has been played extensively with a thumb over the fret, Hendrix style. The headstock has some checking, especially on the face which is of course nitro finish compared to the rest ofd the neck which is poly finish.
As far as modifications go, the only one is a 5 way switch fitted in place of the 3 way. All solder on the 1974 dated, original staggered pole pickups and pots are original and all lake placid blue finish is original too with no overspray or touch ups anywhere.
There is a factory finish scrape to help the pots clear the cavity just by the tone pots. We have seen this before around this period and obviously CBS had a hard time getting the body routes precise, especially on the thicker paint of the custom colours.
All electrics work great and all three pickups are nice and strong and classic grey bottom, glassy sound. Probably the last of the great pickups CBS Fender made in the 70’s.
Guitar is easy to play with some wear on the original frets but still very playable. Action is low and it is a joy to nip up and down the fingerboard.
Included is the original inspection tag, receipt and CBS guarantee card and all of these are very nice things to have for a lush, rare Fender that looks quite stunning…
