Its had a few changes but it is still a wholesome guitar that should not disappoint, especially at this price...
1974 Fender Telecaster Custom anyone?
This guitar has certainly has a certain something about it. The decision to refinish in white may have affected its prices but there’s no doubt its given this guitar a stunning look, particularly when contrasted with the black pickguard. There are the expected nicks and bumps but overall the body is in good shape. Along with the paint job, the control cavity is missing its shielding though its obviously been redone in the switch cavity and an additional ground wire added.
The neck is in good shape, a few marks but nothing serious. The fretboard shows no real signs of wear and the original frets have plenty of life left in them. The logo is still strong
Hardware shows signs of mild corrosion but nothing too extensive. The pasltics are in good order too.
Electrically there are signs that solder joints have been reheated which is to be expected. Even though we have a wide variety of pots under the pickguard, three of them are from around the the same late ‘73/early ‘74 period so its safe to assume they’re correct. Don’t forget that CBS are firmly in control by this stage. The bridge pickup and its volume control seems to be the anomaly as its probably a later addition bought in the UK as there aren’t the expected numbers of a US manufacturer.
The guitar comes with a hardshell case
For many the draw sonically is the Wide Range Humbucker, arguably one of the few worthwhile innovations of the 1970s. In this combination it does not disappoint, providing an ideal foil to the bridge pickup. The clarity and punch the pickup provides both compliments and contrast in an inspiring way.
Not a regular here at ATB but these 70’s Fenders can be surprising. The Wide Range humbucker alone should be enough to peak the interest, and with a price tag like this its worth a second look.
