Looking resplendent decked out in its maple neck and sunburst, this rare Jaguar certainly turns heads around here...

Gorgeous 1972 Fender Jaguar with rare one piece maple neck.

Fender stopped production of the infamous one piece maple neck in 1959, opting for a rosewood fretboard as it didn’t show wear as obviously as the lacquered maple fretboard. Following the take over by CBS in 1965, the decision was taken to reintroduce maple necks, initially as a custom order and then officially in 1967 as a cap. By 1969 Fender had gone back to manufacturing one piece necks with a skunk stripe which were offered as an optional extra in the catalogue.

In stunning condition with very little wear, this guitar has defied the passing of time. Though there is some minor buckle rash on the back and slight checking to the top this guitar surely look as good as the day it left Fullerton, the finish having faded little if at all in the passed 48 years

The four bolt maple neck, is in fabulous condition and is interestingly stamped as ‘SPECIAL’ on the heel. Free of any real wear, the finish has retained that glassy sheen and there is plenty of life left in the original frets. The headstock shows some hairline marks near the top e tuner but otherwise is mark free.

The hardware is in good shape though the saddles are a little corroded. When we received the guitar, the tuner button on the bottom E string was broken so we replaced the button with a new one from another 70’s set of F style tuners.

Electrically all the solder joint look to be undisturbed. The pots are all from 1966 which is not uncommon as CBS seem to have been as much fans of frugality as Leo.

The guitar comes with its correct black Tolex hardshell case

Sonically this guitar sings. Jaguars can be accused of being a little too wiry and lacking in sustain but this one has a depth which needs to be heard to be believed. Any combination of controls yields a very usable and musical sound and there is a liveliness to it that you wouldn’t expect. Its a comfortable guitar to play with a reassuring feel.

Don’t let the year put you off, there are still some jems amongst the 70’s Fender output with this being one of them….
