Lake Placid Blue Fender Jazz Bass from 1970? Read on
Sorry to say this, but this bass surely possesses the ‘funk’. The look of this bass is so evocative of the period, putting you in mind of players such as Larry Graham or Bootsy Collins. Combining a custom colour with the binding, block inlays and marching headstock really works and makes for an eye-catching package.
The colour has changed over time as the clear coat turns yellow and in turn changes the Lucite (Lake Placid Blue is an acrylic colour) shade from a mid blue to the green. The finish has worn through use as this guitar has certainly been around the block a few times. The back shows the usual signs of bucklerash and there’s the expected dings and chips around the edge of the body.
The back the neck is wear free due, in no small part, to the polyester finish and only exhibits a few minor knocks. It feels very comfortable to play. The fretboard is in wonderful shape and the frets have some life left in them. The binding has been replaced from the 18th fret on the bass side to 14th fret on the treble side and an all to common truss rod repair has been expertly carried out by Neil Ivison of Ivison Guitars.
The pick guard, knobs and pickup covers is in great shape as are the hardware. The electronics are all correct for the period, including 1966 pots and plastic wiring except the neck pickup has been replaced (we think) with some black bottom pickup. Fender did use black bottom pickups occasionally during the late 60’s so we are erring on the side of caution here. Whatever the origins, they are both nicely balanced pickups that both sound exactly as you would expect the coolest JB from this period to sound.
The bass comes with a correct black tolex hardshell case.
This instrument is a pleasure to play. plugged in there is all those touch points we’ve come to look for in a good jazz bass. The neck pickup is smooth without being woolly whilst the neck pickup just growls. Combining the two brings a wide palette of tones.
If you’re looking for that custom colour bass to set off the collection, this surely is the one for you. You won’t even need the wide lapels and flared suit pants…..
