Who doesn’t like a custom colour Fender? Here’s a Candy Apple Red Stratocaster from 1969
Love them or hate them, the big headstock, CBS period was not all duds and wastes of perfectly good parts. Prior to the cost cutting of the 70’s, some of these guitars left the factory as very good instruments in fresh custom-hued coats of Nitrocellulose.
This guitar is in good shape. The finish, though it shows signs of wear with the prerequisite dinks and scratches, is still so vibrant. Personally, this writer prefers this shade of red to the seemingly more popular Fiesta. The finish has checked nicely but has hardly faded at all and still retains its deep, dark candy apple red hue.
The 4 bolt neck is in good condition. The poly finish always seems to weather well, which was obviously the idea, and there are no signs of any dinks. The ample of the neck has an attractive flame too which is always nice to see. The rosewood board and frets are in fantastic condition. The headstock and decal are in great shape. There is one extra screw hole in the body which indicates there may have been another pickguard on there at some stage. The plastics have faded a little but that can only be expected of a guitar of this age and the pickguard has the classic 1969 pearloid back that you often see.
The hardware shows no real signs of wear. Two of the saddles may have been replaced (with very good reproductions) as they do not have any tooling marks. Otherwise, everything looks to be correct.
All solder joints look undisturbed with plastic covered wire throughout, apart from a short piece of cloth covered cable on the three way switch, which again is typical for 1969.
The guitar comes with its correct black Tolex covered hardshell case.
This guitar has that classic ‘Strat’ sound, which admittedly is an odd thing to say but what I mean is that this guitar has that essential tone that you’d instantly recognise as a Stratocaster. The neck pickup has that chunky tone that great for chords and a little Hendrixian excursion. The Middle pickup cuts through and brings the funk when backed off. The Bridge pickup has a delightful presence without being too harsh. As with many strats, the in-between settings are the secret weapon and this guitar delivers on these hidden gems.
If your thing is 60’s Strats then this Candy Apple Red marvel might be the one for you.
