Factory original Custom Colour 4 bolt Strats are always cool to have and this 1969 black one is no exception. Sold complete with matching hang tag too...
Who doesn’t like a custom colour Fender? Here’s a really cool Black Stratocaster from 1969…
Love them or hate them, the big headstock, CBS period was not all duds and wastes of perfectly good parts. Prior to the cost cutting of the 70’s, some of these guitars left the factory as very good instruments in fresh custom-hued coats of Nitrocellulose.
This guitar is in good shape. The finish has checked nicely but has hardly faded at all and still retains its shiny black depth, albeit with expected scratches and dings associated with a 51 year old guitar. Interestingly this guitar appears to have been a few different colours, starting with Lake Placid Blue at the bottom, followed possibly by Olympic White, or maybe some off white undercoat and finally topped off by the black we see on the top. This is all totally original, and would have been done by Fender at the factory, before final assembly.
The 4 bolt neck is in nice condition. The poly finish always seems to weather well, which was obviously the idea, with a few minor dinks on the back of the neck but nothing that inhabits playing. The rosewood board is in good condition, it has a small dink in between the 1st and 2nd frets by the low E string but this is not obvious during playing. The guitar has benefited from a refret and as such plays really excellently. The headstock and decal are in decent shape, with just a small bit of lacquer missing from the top of the headstock.
The hardware shows no real signs of wear, everything looks to be all present and correct including the mother of toilet seat pickguard back.
All solder joints look undisturbed with cloth covered wire throughout and that funny with and green ‘chicklit’ cap you only see in 1968 and 1969.
The guitar comes with its correct black Tolex covered hardshell case and original hang tag with matching serial number, which is always a nice thing to have.
This guitar has that classic ‘Strat’ sound, which admittedly is an odd thing to say but what I mean is that this guitar has that essential tone that you’d instantly recognise as a Stratocaster. The neck pickup has that chunky tone that great for chords and a little Hendrixian excursion. The Middle pickup cuts through and brings the funk when backed off. The Bridge pickup has a delightful presence without being too harsh. As with many strats, the in-between settings are the secret weapon and this guitar delivers on these hidden gems.
If your thing is late 60’s Strats then this characterful black example might just be the one for you…
