If diet friendly Telecasters are you're thing, you won't want to miss out on this first year Thinline.....
For your delectation, the natural beauty of this interesting 1968 Fender Telecaster Thinline, with all the right original bits to make it play and sound as good as any out there.
From the first year of manufacture, this guitar represents a design shift from Fender brought about by the shortage in lightweight ash towards the end of the 60’s. First seen in the ‘smugglers’ telecasters of ‘67 and then here in a more refined form, the chambering of the wood not only slims down the weight of the instrument but brings its own tonal characteristic.
This guitar is a bit of a bargain because of a couple of fairly obvious issues. As you can plainly see, some twat decided to mount a Bigsby on it - not really a good idea on a Thinline Tele, however, looks like after he/she realised the folly of his ways, said item was removed leaving 4 nice, ex Bigsby holes to be filled. In addition to this it looks like some other pickguard was on there at some stage as under the original pickguard there are a few extra screw holes.
So is there any good news? YES, in fact there is. The lovely maple cap 1968 date stamped neck is totally original and untouched. The hardware is all correct aside from a slight modification on the bridge and the electrics, pickups etc are also correct so if you can excuse a previous owners brief moment of madness, you can have a Thinline Tele at a real bargain price that will sound and play as good as a 7k original ‘68 one.
As you can see from the pics, it has a few dings and dongs and the top of the guitar has faded where the Bigsby used to be. The bridge has been slightly modified to accommodate the strings from the Bigsby. Having said that, these things aren’t immediately apparent and add a sense of a back-story to this instrument.
The added air of the chambered ash body brings more of a semi-hollow feel to the un-plugged tone, air that comes all the way from Nashville when you plug it in. The maple neck’s gloss finish feels very comfortable and provides a fantastic playing surface. The factory fitted frets show only slights signs of wear, even escaping it in the more common areas. All the expected telecaster tones are here, at once smooth and biting, the chamber adding a little chime to the top end.
Maybe a little overlooked in the past, you shouldn’t let this one go by. if you’re looking for style and killer tone from a Thinline at a bargain price then look no further.
