A workhorse in a pinstriped suit, the 1966 Fender Custom Telecaster.
This guitar is fine example of the mid-60’s fender three tone sunburst that shows off the attractive grain of the alder body. There’s plenty of wear here that tells a tale of endless nights particularly evident on the back. The top has faded a little as you can see although you can see where the yellow has darkened when compared to the finish under the pick guard.
The neck has been worn to a wonderful smooth surface. The guitar had resided in a Portuguese recording studio for many years and it definitely has the feel of a much loved instrument, there is even a section of neck around the first few fewest that worn away more to form a groove. The neck has been refretted and the fretboard lightly sanded as you can see around the second fret where there is the indent. This gives the guitar a reassuring feel when played.
The hardware shows signs of use. The ashtray cover has certainly not been on this guitar very often as is evident by the corrosion on the saddles. The knobs show attrition to the chrome plating but the control plate is still in good shape as is the ashtray. The pickguard has a small area where it looks like the neck pickup hole was slightly filed out, maybe to receive shrinkage.
The electronics are original pickups, pots (dated 1966) and that odd transitional 3 way switch you sometimes see, which has been modified at some stage to post ‘67 configuration with a treble bleed cap, not an uncommon condition for telecasters of this age as not everyone finds the ‘woof’ tone an ideal option!
The guitar comes with its correct Black Tolex hardshell case which is in very nice condition.
This guitar certainly delivers the classic tones tele tones, smoother neck pickup with a bitey bridge sound and nice blend when combinded. The neck is comfortable and sleek.
At once simple and versatile, the telecaster should feature in everyones guitar journey at some stage. The Custom brings an extra level of sophistication to the design and has the look and feel of a well worn pair of jeans - instantly comfortable and oh so familiar…
