Santana at Woodstock and Townshend at Leeds, reason enough to take a look at this 1964 Gibson SG Special.
Designed as a student model, a step up from the Junior, the Special had taken many guises since its introduction in 1955. By 1964 the guitar had lost all connection with its Les Paul heritage but was popular with players such as Toni Iommi and Robbie Krieger, the distinctive look setting the guitar part form its rivals.
This guitar certainly looks the part. The body has some nice checking particularly on the upper waist. The colour has survived quite well, still retaining its redness. The top has suffered some damaged around the jack socket through this does not go into the cavity and is limited to the top few mm. This was probably due to a trodden on jack lead but there is no other damage present on the body.
Along with a few dings here and there, there is some nice wear on the back which again showcases the grain of the mahogany and that wonderful cherry finish.
The lacquer on the neck has worn and faded into a comfortable surface. There are some more dings here too but they’re not too serious. The top edges of the headstock have been worn down to the point of being rounded on the bass side and there is wear to the front too. It’s here that we see evidence of previous tuners, more than likely Schallers (as was the way). The holes have been filled and lacquer applied on the back of the headstock to cover it up. What is nice is that the whole of the headstock hasn’t been refinished and more importantly, there are no headstock breaks.. or even neck heel breaks.
The fretboard has been refretted and its in very good condition. Everything else is correct and in good order. The plastics are in good shape, the pickguard hasn’t warped or cracked and the pickup covers are all intact. This is an original wrap table SG Special and has never had any kind of vibrato fitted.
The bridge has been replaced for a slightly later later one though it is still nickel. A correct bridge would have 4 ascending steps followed by 2 more as originally the guitar would have been strung with a wound third string. Later bridges where compensated for plain strings and so had 3 ascending steps followed by another 3. The posts look to be correct. Electronically everything looks correct. All solder joint are untouched and the pot codes are week 27 of 1964.
The guitar comes with a 90s Gibson hardshell case.
Sonically this guitar is so much more than a ‘student’ guitar. The neck is full bodied and clear with the bridge delivering that raw tone that we just itch for in an SG. A greta rock n roll machine. The neck is so comfortable being a classic, favoured 1964 profile and reassuringly full, just inviting you to play anywhere.
