The person who buys this stunning guitar will be only its second owner.. Its been 20 odd years since we have seen a Clapton spec 335 in this sort of condition and this must probably be the finest one available on the market right now...
Sorry, this item was sold out.
Stunning, near MINT condition, in fact the best we have seen for 20 odd years, ‘Clapton Spec’, single owner 1964 Gibson ES-335 TDC in deep, vibrant cherry red, unharmed by the ravages of time?
This has of course a great medium 1964 neck profile that so players seem to love, capped off with a beautifully deep grained and hardly worn rosewood fingerboard. All original frets show hardly any wear and completely un-touched electrics with two very strong, 1964 PAT Number stickers pickups that have not even had the covers off. All solder is intact everywhere.
This was bought from the widow of the original owner in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England last week. Included is the original guarantee card (sadly now expired..) from Barratts of Manchester, a famous music store in Oxford Rd, Manchester back in the day. It also includes some tips about strings. When the owner bought it in 1964 he had the choice of a Gibson case or a Selmer case (Gibson’s UK distributor at the time). The Gibson case was a lot more expensive and as he had just spent a fortune on the guitar he decided to buy the Selmer case. For its next owner we will offer a choice of a period correct 1964 Gibson case OR the original Selmer UK case it was supplied in - take your pick.
The finish is totally unfaded, it still has a strong, deep cherry red that we rarely see on these. The original owner only played it for less than two years then most of the time it has been in its case. There is only one thing that might prevent this from being a truly mint guitar. The design of the Selmer case unfortunately means that a screw sits in a spot that’s in constant contact with the lower bout. This inevitably causes damage to the finish and is a thing that we’ve come across with other guitars sold in the same cases. Otherwise, aside from a few other, very minor dings, this is a totally stunning example, well worthy of the ‘near mint’ category.
The binding is still quite bright white, hardly faded or yellowed, and the nickel hardware is in excellent condition too, again this is something we rarely see on these!
It has two totally un-molested PAT Number pickups, both with strong readings and perfectly balanced. It plays like a dream, perfect set up and classic sound to die for and is a real exceptional example in every dimension - looks, playability and sound.
Needless to say no solder has been disturbed, all electrics are original, all hardware is original or correct and there are no finish issues or touch ups anywhere.
Jut look at the photos and let them do the talking…
If you fancy becoming the second owner of this guitar just get in touch and come down to try it out. You won’t be disappointed and it is a true investment grade example.
