A real stunner this one and it looks so perfect you would be hard pressed to say it was not an original finish... We have a feeling this may sell pretty quickly!
Sorry, this item was sold out.
Late 1963 Fender Strat anyone? The only thing on this guitar that dates to very early 1964 is the serial number plate, everything else, including the classic, slightly chunky 63 neck profile and the black bottom pickups are firmly in 1963 territory.
We only sell Strat refins here at ATB Guitars when we know the provenance of them and can be sure they are not ‘Partscasters’ like so many out there are. We know this one well and can are happy to pass on its history to the lucky new owner.
As ever, Clive has done a stunning job on this guitar. The attention to detail as ever is astounding. The sunburst recreates the period correct finish so well with a shadow underneath the pickguard. The way he’s subtly reliced the body really adds to the authentic look of the guitar. Interestingly, this guitar is returning to us having been sold to the previous owner with an interesting Lake Placid Blue finish that was not entirely to the owners liking - we like it a lot better this way..!
The neck has its original factory finish under an old, clear overspray and is itself in good condition without too much wear. It has been refretted and the work was featured in Guitar Magazine (article is online and was printed in the September 2019 issue) as the frets were installed using Fender’s original technique. The results are excellent and gives you a neck that is as near to factory as possible. The fretboard wasn’t touched so still shows signs of wear in places but nothing too drastic. The logo is still strong though the screws on the tuners aren’t original.
The hardware is virtually all correct, as are the plastics (apart from the trem arm tip) and the all of the important electrics with classic, black bottom, pre-CBS pickups all strong on original windings. There is a little corrosion on some of the hardware but nothing too drastic.
The nitrate pickguard is in superb condition and crack free, with no broken tip, loaded with the correct electronics that has some solder disturbance due to the refin but not too much as you can see from the pictures.
The guitar comes with a good hardshell case.
There’s always magic in these pre-CBS strats. The neck pickup alone is so evocative with each position of the selector switch yielding a classic tone that is well balanced across all three original pickups. The refret makes this guitar a joy to play all up and down the fingerboard.
A Clive Brown refinish is revered for good reason and is so much more than a refinish implies. This one won’t hang around. Grab it before it gets away…
