Stunning investment grade, pre-CBS, rare custom colour Strat, in near MINT condition. Just in from the original owner - what's not to like...?
Sorry, this item was sold out.
It has been over five years since we last saw a pre-CBS, spaghetti logo, custom colour Strat in factory black and at that time, it sold on Reverb (before our website was as popular as it is now) for a record price and went on to hold the Reverb record price for a late 63 Fender Strat for some years…
In that time we have sold several Fiesta Reds and Olympic Whites, quite a few Lake Placid, Daphne and Sonic Blues, a couple of Candy Apple Reds and Shoreline Golds, even a Burgundy Mist and a Seafoam Green but this is the first time we have had an original factory black for a long while. They are rare.
This beauty is near MINT, it has never been circulated and was purchased via a dealer friend of ours, from the original owner on 20th February 2020. Included is a picture of her holding it, with a lovely grin on her face… possibly brought upon by the large sum of money she has just received.
It comes complete with all the case candy you see pictured which includes, cloth, strap, strings, bridge cover, envelope and a near MINT, correct and rare, no logo, black tolex case. Just take a good look at the pictures to see what you are getting. It also includes the original pickguard guard that you can see in the picture of the lady that we very carefully peeled off and put on a piece of card in the case.
Needless to say it is completely original and correct, undisturbed solder joints and issue free. It appears like it was played for a while at the start of its life then spent a long while living a vampire like existence, nestled in its case and judging by the almost total lack of fade anywhere, it has hardly seen daylight at all. There is next to no fret wear, no fingerboard rutting and it plays brilliantly well on the original frets.
There are just a few small dings here and there that prevent us from describing it as MINT and none of them, aside from a minuscule one on the bottom edge have gone through the clearcoat. The hardware is in stunning condition with just a minor amount of oxidisation showing on the bridge saddles and tuners.
The plastics look almost like new, the pickguard is extremely clean, with very little fade and of course crack free. Even the decal is perfect and it has to be said we do not see them like this very often.
All three hand dated 1964 pickups sound brilliant, in fact we find in general this era of Strat pickups to be very bell like tonally and one of the best. All three are very strong with DC readings in the high 5k low 6k’s.
Finish is stunning, it really does gleam and looks more like a lightly used three year old Strat rather than one that is 56 years old. The neck as you can see is very light still. This one also has all the desirable 1963 features such as a green guard, clay dots, slightly chunkier feeling neck and of course the spaghetti logo.
Guitars like this are getting a lot harder to source, we have no idea when another original black pre-CBS Strat will come our way, especially one in such investment grade condition as this one is. Snooze and you’ll looze…
