A superb example of a 1963 spec, classic Fender Precision with the slightly fuller neck and beautiful and rare blonde Tolex case...
Late 1963 early ‘64 Sunburst Precision Bass is sometimes all you need.
The workhorse bass that formed the backbone to hits from Motown to the Clash and beyond, the Precision Bass is bass guitar, the Genesis of amplified low register and the blue print for the instrument for years to come.
This bass has certainly lead a charmed life. The finish is still so vibrant and shows no real signs of fading. This too has stayed remarkably free of any major marks apart form a few near the bridge. The back shows a few more scars and wear from the buckle although this only seems to have gone as deep as the stain on the wood. The colours as you can see from the pictures are still very strong. Underneath the pickguard, as you can see from the pics, the previous owner has moved the screws on the guard as it has shrunk in an effort to keep the original nitrate guard on the bass without breaking off or cracking further.
The neck has a wonderfully light, unfaded hue and like the body shows no real signs of colour degradation. Its also managed to survive without any real serious marks. The fretboard is also immaculate and the frets have plenty of life left in them.
The pick guard has shrunk and cracked slightly over the years and as previously mentioned, the screws moved so as to accommodate this shrinkage, one thing that is sometimes inevitable with nitrocellulose. The foil shield is intact and original with the factory red stamps.
The hardware is in good condition. The bridge has seemed to have lived its life under the cover and shows only slight signs of corrosion. Both covers are in great condition. Electronically everything looks correct though a couple of the solder joints look as though they might have been reheated at some stage and an extra ground wire may have been added at some stage.
The bass comes with a correct rare blonde telex hardshell case only available from Fender in 1963 and like the overall condition of the bass, is in superb condition.
This bass delivers the right blend of growl and round full tone with authority without any need for bells or whistles. Just what you want!
They don’t all make it this far and its so nice to find one that’s in this condition. With looks and tone like this, it won’t be here long….
