A very early 1963 Strat with just about the right amount of wear (we think) and all the important parts present and correct. It also has the slightly chunkier neck that makes 63 a popular year for Strats...
Sorry, this item was sold out.
It feels the word relic should be defined by a worn in Stratocaster. Seems, maybe just to the writer, that the mental image that the word conjures is of a sunburst Stratocaster, the long hours of playing burned into its surfaces. In fact, just like this very early 1963 Fender Stratocaster.
Unlike the output of the Fender Custom Shop, this ‘63 has definitely seen some honest playing hours put into it over the past 50 years. Though not as extensive as some other examples we’ve seen, there is some exquisite wear and paint chips on the front, belly wear on the back that’s gone through to the wood and the colours are still vibrant.
The neck has has been lightly over sprayed in clear with the logo having been replaced. its been refretted so it does play really nicely. There are a few divots in the fingerboard here and there but none of them are deep enough to feel during playing. The neck date is quite faded but 62 can be clearly seen at the end and we would estimate this to be late in the year, maybe around November, December.
Hardware has worn as you’d expect though this isn’t extensive. The nitrocellulose pick guard is in excellent, classically greened and remarkably crack free condition as are the knobs and pickup covers with only a little yellowing and the fading of the text.
Electronically, everything is correct with all pickups having original forever windings and healthy outputs. Pot dates are week 2 of 1963 and serial number indicates early 1963. Neck profile is that classic, slightly chunkier feel you get on 63 and early 64 Strats that make them sought after by a fair few players.
The guitar comes with its correct Brown Tolex hard case with the correct red lining which has all latches working fine.
This guitar is a lot of fun to play and really exemplifies that early 60s Strat tone, more girth and not as brittle as later incarnations could end up sounding.
This guitar has all the important elements in place and feels great to play. Don’t let it pass you by…
