One owner, original Olympic white 62 P Bass that has just been restored to its original Oly White glory. Read the full story below...
Sorry, this item was sold out.
Late 1962 Olympic White Precision Bass is sometimes all you need.
The workhorse bass that formed the backbone to hits from Motown to the Clash and beyond, the Precision Bass is bass guitar, the Genesis of amplified low register and the blue print for the instrument for years to come.
This bass has quite a story having been owned by the same person from new. It was bought on hire purchase for the original owner when he was 15 years old by the manager of the band he’d just joined in Blackburn, paid off at £4 a month which at the time represented quite an outlay. With the regular gigging, using a strap with horse brasses attached (!), and no protective clear coat (from the factory) over the original Olympic white finish the colour soon wore off and by 1969 the bass was stripped and refinished with a clear coat.
More importantly is the fact that this bass has provided nearly 60 years of service with the same, single owner and apart from the body colour and a volume pot, nothing has been changed on it.
We sent the body to Neil Ivison of Ivison Guitars to refinish it which he has done excellently. As it had suffered the odd knock and dink through the years, Neil has worked these into the final, further relicing it to match with the wear. We also requested that he not put a clear coat over it as would have been the case originally
The all original neck has worn wonderfully. This is a perfect example of an early rosewood veneer fretboard where you can see that they were still using much ticker pieces of rosewood before they refined the process. Maybe not surprising, the fretboard is in fantastic condition and the frets have plenty of life left in them.
The pick guard has shrunk slightly over the years but not as much as you’d expect maybe. There is a little warpping but again this os very minimal. The foil shield is present and original with the factory red stamps.
The hardware is in good condition. The bridge has some corrosion. Both covers too show signs of corrosion. The previous owner bought a new cover for the bridge as he found the flakes of chrome would lodge themselves in his hand whilst he played. He tended to play with the pickup cover on as you can see by the pics.
Electronically the tone pot is correct as is the capacitor and cloth wiring. The volume pot has been changed.
The bass comes with a hardshell case.
This bass delivers the right blend of growl and round full tone with authority without any need for bells or whistles. Just what you want!
This is an excellent bass with a brilliant story. With looks and tone like this, it won’t be here long….
