Body refin, either an expertly done recent-ish one or a very old over spray, it is quite difficult to tell but whatever it's history is, it is one hell of a great sounding and playing first year Jaguar that has all the looks, feel, sound and smell of a 10k guitar...
This was originally brought to us to sell on consignment having been purchased from another dealer who described it as ‘all original, including finish’. It is not.
On the surface it most definitely does look to be original finish, sonic blue, with authentic checking and spot on finish match for an original 1962 aged sonic blue but it is a body refin. We only discovered this when we took the thing apart to carefully have a look under the hood and discovered over spray on various metal foil shielding, some paint in the nail holes and evidence of overspray in the neck pocket.
It is either a very old, overspray or an expertly applied, relic refinish done within the last 20 years or so by someone who really knows what they are doing with mimicking old, authentic Fender finishes. Whatever the truth is, it is a refin and should not have been sold as an all original finish.
That being said, there is NO way you would be able to tell this is an overspray or refin unless you took the thing apart. It is a totally brilliant job and looks utterly convincing. All hardware and electrics are correct and/or original including the classic black bottom pre-CBS pickups and the pots that date to 45th week of 1962. Most of the solder joints are original original too and everything looks really, really good! Pickguard is the correct mint green type which is exactly as it should be but the aluminium foil shield is missing.
It also happens to play like a demon and sounds as good as any Jag we have had here, in fact probably better. Everyone who has tried this one out is super impressed and blown away with how it feels, plays and sounds. It even smells good and vintage!
Earlyish curved board neck dated October 1962 with still a decent amount of rosewood on it. Frets are in good shape and in our opinion it is not in need of a refret. Included is a very nice, correct brown Tolex case with the burnt red lining.
It looks so good it will fool anyone and until we took this apart, we had no reason at all to doubt the authenticity of the rare finish. This guitar was probably originally sonic blue or some other kind of custom colour. There is no evidence of any sunburst under the finish and if it was sunburst, or even Olympic White it would have been fitted with a tortoise guard rather than a green guard.
If you ever wanted a first year Fender Jag in sonic blue but could not quite stretch to one, then this may indeed interest you…
