One arch top to rule them all? We'll let you decide...

Classy and refined, this rare and beautiful blonde 1961 Gibson L5 CN really doesn’t have to try to hard to impress…

Spruce and a natural finish make a great combo. The rich colour of top is complimented by the lighter tone of the maple sides and carved maple back. There are a few minor marks on the top along with some player wear but this doesn’t take away from the overall look. The back still retains that vibrant gloss finish that played so well with the ever changing shimmer of the maple.

The three piece neck has been constructed with some well matched, subtly flamed maple. Again here, as with the back, the lacquer is in good shape. The profile isn’t too chunky and would suit those arch top players looking for a slimmer neck with maybe a bit more of a D profile towards the heel. The bound ebony fretboard has been re-fret at some stage and there are a few signs of wear but not a great deal. None of this detract from the feel and it must be said that it plays very well.

The ‘Finger rest’ pickguard, more commonly referred to as the as the Ted McCarthy pickup too has survived well. There is a little piece of metal that’s been added to keep it in placed stop the pickup from fouling the strings but otherwise there isn’t too much warping and it can actually be played Ok without this metal pice too. The electronics look to be correct and untouched.

The tailpiece has a little wear to the top corner, probably form having a jacketed arm resting on it! Otherwise its in good shape.

The guitar comes with a period 50’s brown hardshell Lifton type case.

As mentioned previously, this guitar is a joy to play. The refret helps give the guitar a reassuring feel and the acoustic tone is to die for. Plugged in it just sings, the pickup has a P90-esque construction with less of a midrange which keeps things a littler clearer.

If arch tops are your thing or if your looking to add one to the collection then you can’t go wrong with this one. Plays like. dream and looks just too cool to boot!
