1960 slab board Fender Telecaster anyone?
What do you do if your maple boards start looking shabby on the television? Stick a slab of rosewood on there. Introduced in 1959, the rosewood boards were initially planed flat and fitted to the maple necks before a radius was sanded on top practice that continued until the middle of 1962 whereby a veneer of rosewood was stuck to a pre radiused maple neck to save money.
This is a very nice shade of red that’s been well applied at some stage. This doesn’t seem to have been reliced much if at all. From where the finish has worn to the wood, you can see the ash body underneath. There is no sign of any additional routes or modifications.
The neck has thankfully escaped refinishing although it looks like it may have been lightly rubbed with wire wool. The lacquer has worn nicely with some signs of wear on the on the rosewood slab-board. the frets have been changed but are correct to the era. The decal has survived well.
The hardware shows signs of age but is not overly corroded. Its worth noting that the bridge has additional holes so the guitar can be strung as a top loader. This must have been the last of these bridges at Fullerton as the experiment only lasted a short time in the late 50’s . The single ply pickguard is in great shape.
The electrics have been modified to post 1967 spec, pots dated week 47 1959 with a correct‘telephone book’ capacitors, though there has been some re-flowed solder due to the re-finishing process.
The guitar comes with a hardshell case that is not the original.
All positions yield that classic telecaster tone. The neck pickup has that chunky quality that seems to be so easily forgotten. The bridge pickup has plenty of twang without getting brittle or harsh.
A rare sight anywhere, these early 60s slab-board telecasters are a treat. Grab it before it gets away…
