1959 Gibson ES-330 TD anyone?
Introduced in 1959 as the successor to the ES-225, the ES-330 bridged the gap between the new centre block guitars and Gibson’s classic archtops of the previous decades, becoming a firm favourite with players such as BB King and Grant Green not to mention the rhythm guitar of choice for many.
Finding a first year, 1959 ES-330 with the typical, classic medium chunky neck profile is a lot more difficult that you would first imagine. Most we see are the late ‘59 profile so this one is a treat with the chunkier profile. This one has very faded stamps inside that are difficult to read, it could be an early 1960 but importantly it has all the 59 features such as the bigger feeling neck, 59 dated pots, amber bonnet knobs and switch tip plus the brown case.
All totally original aside from a refret and with the 5 latch Lifton brown and pink case, this is a superb example of the first and most desirable version of the sunburst ES-330 hollow body thinline. It is in really nice condition as you can see from the pics and there is little wear or marks on the instrument.. The Original frets are in good shape. There are a few marks on the fretboard from tooling but these do not affect playability.
A strap button has been added at some stage to the heel, as these originally came without one and another strap button was at one time installed in the underside of the heel but this has now been filled in.
This is a very comfortable guitar to play and to hold, they did get a lot of things right with this guitar first time around and subtle things like the balance is perfect, the tone is exquisite and the feel is wonderful. It is such a light weight too you will hardly notice anything hanging around your shoulders.
All original electrics with two stunning vintage, black covered P-90’s that are strong and evenly balanced. No solder joints have been disturbed. All hardware is correct and even the original no wire ABR-1 has all of its original saddles still there. Nickel parts have even kept their shine, and the plastics are in great shape with no warpage on the pickguard.
Electrically everything is correct with pots dated at week 47 of 1959
Case is also in excellent shape with all five latches working and compliments the guitar perfectly.
If you are looking for a classic ES-330 then this is without a doubt the very best example out there! We challenge anyone to come, play it and not feel at all like putting this superb guitar down…
