Superb and rare first year Les Paul Custom black beauty with very early, first batch features...
This product is currently on hold.
Very rare, first year of manufacture 1953 Gibson Les Paul Custom in very fine condition, with a few early features unique to this period.
We love these guitars. Very under rated but such a great alternative to the standard. All mahogany body construction with no maple cap seems to suit giving you a twist on the Les Paul tone.
As mentioned earlier, this has a few features that are unique to the period including a smaller headstock which is highlighted by the inlay, a thinner eared tailpiece, no serial number and an early staple pickup with the corners taken off.
This nice example has a very nice top carve. Just a small amount of checking and a few dings. The neck popped off in transit (as a result of original glue drying out) for the previous owner and was re-attached by luthier Piers Crocker.. This has left a very thin line around the neck joint where the finish has broken which can only really be seen under black light. Elsewhere there are no finish issues and no touch ups. All solder is untouched with pots dated at week 23 of 1953. All hardware is correct.
The ebony fretboard is as you expect exceptional with its original frets and though there is some quite extensive wear on a few, the guitar remains playable. This guitars future does have an imminent refret in it though.
Pickups are both fantastic yielding a plethora of wonderful tones. The staple pickup adding that sophistication in the neck position and the P90 bringing the grunt.
Beautiful classic design just looks so right in its Black and Gold livery. With its original case its quite the combo worthy of any collection.
