It's not often we see original scalloped braced Martins here but this 1943 example is a real nice player and also happens to sound just a bit superb also...
Well what do we have here? A 1943 scalloped braced Martin 00-18
By no means a mint example, this guitar has certainly seen some life. The Adirondack spruce top has been refinished at some stage and as such is in good condition, the pickguard was also replaced when the top was done. The top does belly a noticeable amount but miraculously this does not affect the intonation, or the action and plays perfectly well as it is right now.. There also seems to be evidence that a sound hole pickup was fitted to the guitar at some point as theres some slight damage to the treble side of the sound hole.
The mahogany back and sides have been left alone so show more signs of wear, the most prominent being on the back where the lacquer has worn to the wood. further evidence of potential electrification comes with a plugged hole in the lower corner of the body where water is also evidence of plugged screw holes possibly from a jack plate. The bridge is correct with the only change being a single white bridge pin.
The neck has not been reset and is in good condition with little wear to the lacquer. The fretboard has been refretted at some point, the board shows some signs of wear so hasn’t been sanded or planed. As you’ve most probably noticed already, a previous owner has had Grover tuners fitted to which does add some noticeable weight to the neck of the guitar. This though does not affect playability and tuning is stable. Again the headstock still has its original finish and the logos still present.
The guitar comes with a superb original 1943 hardshell case that is more than likely the one this guitar came with.
If you’re here then you know how good these Martins sound. Balanced with a fullness that belays its size, this guitar is comfortable in any setting, be that finger picking or strumming; a tone that is so uniquely Martin. Easy to play with an almost instantly familiar feel and a sound that is sweet as a nut.
A benchmark tonal touchstone, a vintage Martin is surely a must have for any guitar collection. Get this one, you won’t regret it!
