2018-gibson-es-275-black
2018 Gibson ES-275, Black

A superb 2018 Gibson ES-275 Custom, finished in Ebony with gold hardware and presented in very clean condition.

The ES-275 was one of the more interesting designs to come out of Gibson Memphis in its later years. Taking plenty of visual cues from Gibson’s traditional jazz boxes, particularly the L-5, it scaled the idea down into a compact 15" fully hollow body with a Venetian cutaway and 24.75" scale. The result is a guitar with proper archtop character that feels considerably easier to manage than a full-sized jazz box.

This example certainly looks the part. The Ebony finish is paired with multi-ply binding, gold hardware, full block fingerboard inlays, bound tortoiseshell pickguard and the split-diamond headstock inlay, giving it a suitably high-end Gibson appearance.

Construction comprises a 3-ply figured maple/poplar/maple body with no centre block, supported by quarter-sawn Adirondack spruce bracing. The neck is quarter-sawn mahogany with a rounded C profile, 22 frets and a 12" radius fingerboard. Gibson specified a bone nut and 24.75" scale for the model.

The neck on this example measures 42.7mm at the nut, with a depth of 22.7mm at the 1st fret and 23.7mm at the 12th. It’s a comfortable, fairly even profile and suits the guitar particularly well.

Hardware includes gold plated Grover Milk Bottle Rotomatics, the three-bar archtop tailpiece and an ABR-1 with titanium saddles mounted on a rosewood floating base. Everything is finished in gold, which always works particularly well against the black finish.

The factory 2018 spec uses Gibson MHS Rhythm and Lead humbuckers with hand-wired MTC Premiere electronics, matched 550k pots and Orange Drop capacitors. On this guitar the pickups measure 7.42k at the neck and 7.89k at the bridge, a nicely balanced set.

Tonally it sits between a traditional jazz guitar and something more versatile. There’s plenty of hollowbody warmth and air, but the relatively compact dimensions and humbuckers keep things articulate and controlled. Clean sounds are rich and clear, while the bridge pickup has enough bite to move comfortably into blues and rootsier electric territory.

All in all, a very classy late-period Gibson Memphis model. The ES-275 didn’t remain in production for long, and with its compact fully hollow construction, Custom-level appointments and striking Ebony/gold combination, this is a particularly appealing example. Comes complete with original case and Gibson COA booklet.
