They must have saved the best 'til last as this one is number 299 from a run of 300 made!

An excellent model from the Gibson Custom Shop, and one of the more prominent in the Collectors Choice series, this model is based on the famous 'Burst owned by the late Bernie Marsden, used extensively throughout his career since the '70s. Gibson went to great lengths to reproduce the look, feel and specification of his original model, right down to the ageing patterns and individual neck carve. This example has a particularly nice tight flame top, with plenty of movement without being overly dramatic. The aged Dirty Lemon Burst has that lovely faded appearance, and the factory ageing is nicely judged throughout. Condition is excellent, with little obvious wear beyond the ageing applied by Gibson.

Construction follows Gibson’s 2013 Historic specification, with a lightweight one-piece mahogany body, figured maple top, mahogany neck and one-piece rosewood fingerboard. The neck joint uses hot hide glue, with the historically accurate truss rod assembly, nylon nut and aniline dye to the back, neck and sides; all details introduced as part of Gibson Custom’s 20th Anniversary Historic updates that year.

The neck is a substantial but very comfortable ’50s profile, measuring 42.8mm at the nut, 23.2mm deep at the 1st fret and 25.1mm at the 12th. It has the support you expect from a good ’59-style carve and despite its size it doesn't feel unnecessarily bulky.

Electronics comprise the model-specific BurstBucker #2 neck and BurstBucker #3 bridge pickups, chosen to recreate the character of Bernie’s original guitar. They offer plenty of clarity and openness, with a strong midrange when pushed and the sort of balance between warmth and bite that suits a good Les Paul particularly well. CTS controls and Bumblebee-style capacitors complete the vintage-inspired setup.

Hardware includes the correct nickel ABR-1 bridge, lightweight aluminium stopbar, Kluson single-line/ring tuners and gold bonnet knobss.

This one comes complete with its original Custom Shop case, Collector’s Choice certificate and tags. Also included is a Japanese warranty leaflet suggesting number 299 may originally have been supplied through the Japanese market.

A particularly nice example of one of the better-known Collector’s Choice models. With a great tight-flame top, excellent condition, chunky neck and number 299 from the limited run of 300, it has plenty of appeal both as a serious Les Paul to play and as an increasingly collectible piece of Gibson Custom Shop history.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0917/7258/4275/files/2013GibsonCollector_sChoiceCC08A_TheBeast_-6.jpg?v=1791541365
