The black finish has survived remarkably well, with the main signs of age showing in the gold hardware, which has developed an attractive worn patina over the years. Against the multi-ply binding, ebony board and gold appointments it has that classic Les Paul Custom look with some updated appointments from the previous model.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe neck is comfortable and nicely proportioned, measuring 41.5mm at the nut, with a depth of 21.2mm at the 1st fret and 24.7mm at the 12th. It has a comfortable medium feel in the lower positions but fills out nicely as you move up the neck, making it a very easy guitar to get around.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHardware is all correct, including the Gibson Speedwinder tuners, correct Nashville-style bridge and black speed knobs.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt retains its correct Tim Shaw humbuckers, with intact solder and matching CTS pots dating to the 35th week of 1981. The wiring appears untouched throughout kept in excellent condition by the pot cavity covers that were fitted in this period. Pickup readings are beautifully balanced at 7.31k in the neck and 7.33k at the bridge.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Tim Shaw humbuckers sound superb in this guitar: clear and open for a humbucker, with good note separation, plenty of harmonic content and enough weight when pushed. There’s none of the woolliness you sometimes get from humbnuckers, and the bridge and neck positions balance particularly well.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAll in all, a very clean, original early-’80s Les Paul Custom, with a great set of Tim Shaw pickups and just enough wear to the gold hardware to show some nice age.
