1962-fender-stratocaster-fiesta-red
1962 Fender Stratocaster, Fiesta Red

A truly exceptional 1962 Fender Stratocaster, finished in original Fiesta Red and presenting as one of those rare custom colour pre-CBS Strats that really does seem to have it all.

Original Fiesta Red Strats from this period are special guitars in any condition, but this example is particularly compelling. The finish has all the right period character, factory sprayed over the correct desert sand undercoat, with the kind of depth and richness that makes original Fiesta Red such a desirable custom colour.

Condition is excellent overall, with just the right amount of honest wear. There are a few small dings, marks and areas of local chip touch-up, some of which look to have been done with a pen and could potentially be removed if desired, but nothing that distracts from the overall impression. The original green guard is crack-free and has aged beautifully alongside the surrounding plastics, giving the guitar a wonderfully coherent and untouched look.

The neck is a real highlight, with a medium chunky C profile unlike earlier Rosewood board models that tend to be on the slimmer side. It has just the right amount of wear to the back giving it that smooth, played-in feel that makes a great old Strat so addictive to play. The neck date is October 1962, matching beautifully with the serial number 87383 and the Stackpole pots, all of which date to week 42 of 1962.

Originality is outstanding. The hardware, frets, electronics and solder joints all appear undisturbed, and the guitar retains its correct black-bottom pickups, original mint guard, correct hardware and plastic parts. It also comes with a lovely brown Tolex case, ashtray bridge cover, strap and even a matching "Fiesta Red" curly lead.

Electrically, all three original black-bottom pickups are well balanced and full of that classic early ’60s bell-like clarity. With the guitar wide open, it has chime, snap, warmth and articulation in all the right places; everything you want from a really great rosewood board Strat. One thing to mention is that the neck pickup is reading very hot, and although it sounds great right now, this indicates an imminent repair or rewind. We can assist with this should the buyer choose to have the work done now or in the future.

All in all, this is a superb original Fiesta Red 1962 Stratocaster with exceptional originality, stunning colour, strong period-correct dating and a fantastic playing feel. A beautiful, highly collectible and example.
