A killer vintage players Kalamazoo Gibson with no repairs to the usual headstock or heel areas. Strong Cherry red with the iconic late 60’s batwing pickguard.
Featuring a lightweight double cut Honduras Mahogany body with a three piece Mahogany neck. A bound Rosewood fingerboard with pearl dots and a Pearl inlayed Headstock logo complete the traditional Gibson Special appointments. The serial number range is for 1970-1972 but the lack of Volute and Made in USA stamp to the rear of the headstock indicate a very late ’69/early 70 production date. SG’s from this period features the revised heel joint, five-ply ‘Batwing’ pickguard and Witch hat knobs that define the SG though the second half of the sixties and into the early seventies.
This guitar has had some changes along the way and as well as the stop tail conversion the tuners were at some point changed but it is now sporting correct period replacements with drew holes plugged. It currently has a reproduction Tailpiece and short Vibrola fitted now it has reverted back to its original spec with the bonus that the new bridge-tailpiece is intoned for a plain G string. The most recognisable chance comes in the form of a pair of period Gibson Humbuckers fitted. Thanks to the production of the SG model during this period there was no need to route the body underneath the pickguard. The pickups themselves are a Gibsons Patent Sticker Humbuckers dating from the late sixties/ early seventies. The chrome covers have been replaced with Nickel ones but there is no reason to believe the pickups have been re-wound. Inside the control cavity noting looks to have been disturbed with the exception of the pickup wires. The CTS pots have their date codes obscured but the visible part code is correct for the SG Special from this period.
The guitars finish still has a nice strong cherry hue, there are areas of wear and the odd knock and bump, all consistent with a guitar that has been used regularly. The headstock, heel and input are all free of cracks and repairs and the guitar has a consistent UV signature under blacklight although there looks to have been some localised lacquer work to the top where the forearm rests and the pickguard has additional holes and a brushed finish.
The neck has a typical late sixties chunky C profile with a nut width of 40.08mm. Depth at the first fret is a slim 20.65mm tapering out to a fatter 24.65mm at the 12th fret.
The guitar weighs in at a featherweight 6.35bs and comes with a modern ABS Case.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0917/7258/4275/files/dsc00333_08c9d55c-c9a0-4c45-942c-1db741077e18.jpg?v=1762537418
1965-gibson-sg-custom-refin-black-hsc
1965 Gibson SG Custom, Refin Black + HSC

This one has created quite a stir since it was featured in our new arrivals unboxing video... so we very much doubt it will hang around! A fantastic player grade 3 pickup SG custom, refinished in black and looking mean! There are many changes as listed beneath the pics, but is has certainly been a cherished guitar, customised to a previous owner's spec.

Very much a 'players grade' Gibson SG Custom from circa 1965, this one has certainly had a life. Here are the highlights -
Original 1965/6 body and neck, neck has been shaved to a flat, wide profile but still has a full+ nut width. Original ebony fingerboard and block markings but with an added, multi-ply binding! Nice, pat pend nickel Grover tuners are fitted. Guitar has been refinished a few years ago in a real nice ebony finish and does look the part.
Replaced plastics aside from the knobs which are original 60's reflector knobs with silver inserts. Hardware has mostly been replaced however even though the current Bigsby fitted is not correct, this looks as if it could have been an original Bigsby equipped SG Custom.
Pickups are a mix including a Brandownwound PAF and a DiMarzio in the middle position which is currently not connected. Pots are later and caps are orange drops. Bridge is unknown repro of decent quality. Back plate is correct.
Guitar was originally white and traces of the original paint can be seen in the cavities. It looks like it was probably red at some time too.
We think this is a late 1965 or early '66 guitar. We have no idea if there has been any neck repairs as the black finish could be concealing anything however there is no apparent evidence we can see right now of any repairs.
It plays real well and sounds very good and of course it is cheap! As you can see JB added (very neatly it must be said) a fuzz and a treble boost circuit which actually sounds kinda cool - think 70's Mud, Sweet, Slade type of sound. He also dropped in his own set of Hyperflux humbucking pickups which are actually very good and I believe fairly sought after.
Included is some paperwork including the original invoice for the work, actually signed by John Birch himself, plus a period catalogue and some other interesting bits.
The guitar itself is a 1964 Gibson SG Standard with original pots dating late 1963. It has had its original Maestro trem removed and a John Birch adjustable bridge/tailpiece fitted which works very well. It has been refretted and in typical John Birch style, the fingerboard has been lacquered.
There is a sign that the neck heal has had some work but no headstock breaks and it does not appear if the neck has been off at any time.
Overall, it is in very good condition and still retains a deep cherry hue. There is a mark on the back of the neck which looks like a bad reaction to another case it has been in. The holes on the front have been filled and over sprayed. Truss rod cover has been replaced and some of the screws too.
A nice piece of history which we exhibited recently at the Birmingham Guitar Show where John Birch was based of course. Firstly it looks great, still retaining vibrance in its cherry finish with minimal fading. The neck is a nice medium C profile and the guitar overall plays very well. Purchased in the early '70s by Neol Davies, guitarist, songwriter and founding member of Coventry’s iconic 2 Tone band The Selecter, this SG later passed to Roger Lomas—guitarist for The Sorrows and The Dodgers, and now a Grammy Award-winning producer.
Neol Davies played this SG Junior during the early days of The Selecter—a band at the forefront of the 2-Tone movement alongside The Specials. It was The Selecter’s raw, rhythmic guitar-driven sound and mix of ska, reggae and punk rock that helped define British ska in the late '70s and early '80s. Included with the guitar are photographs of Neol playing it at a formative early gig - an event he personally described as "the birth of 2-Tone." Recently the guitar was loaned to the 2 Tone Lives and Legacies exhibition in Coventry, and Neol was reunited with it once again.
Later in the '70s Neol sold the guitar to Roger Lomas - a guitarist whose early career with bands The Sorrows and The Dodgers (see case stencil) gave way to producing, most notably for acts like The Selecter, Bad Manners, The Specials and in later years earning a Grammy for his work with Lee Scratch Perry.
As for the guitar itself, it’s a really good example weighing in at a featherweight 2.55 kg or 5.62 lbs! The neck is particularly nice - a wide feeling 'C' profile that sits comfortably. The guitar has been routed to accommodate an original Gibson T-Top humbucker - something that first attracted Neol to the guitar when he saw it on display in a shop on London's Denmark Street. The combination of this humbucker with the lightweight, resonant, thin Honduras Mahogany body makes for a very dynamic instrument that has an excellent ring and a very pleasant 'airiness' to the sound, with nice bite and clarity. The pots have their date codes covered by solder but are of CTS manufacture and appear from the period. It has a custom made circular 5-ply plastic jack plate, likely added for stability or to cover an old repair around the jack socket. While non-original, it's become part of the guitar's history and we think it looks great.
This SG has clearly been used over the years and it has some attractive play wear, fading and patina to show for it. The cherry finish has faded nicely, with honest wear throughout that adds tons of character.
