The artwork is stunning, the quality so high and really accentuates the finish. It has some light aging by Stephen Stern but really does look the part.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe neck is in superb shape with its glossy finish. The fretboard is also in superb shape as are the frets. This guitar, being unsold is exactly how it left the Gretsch factory in 2010.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe hardware on this one is exceptional and this too has been lightly aged by Stephen Stern. One clasp of the case has broken off during moving at some stage (not by us) but is in the case pocket Included is also the original Gretsch cardboard shipping carton.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe electronics are in perfect shape and have remained untouched. \u003cbr\u003e\nThe guitar comes with its correct leather covered hardshell case which has also been pinstriped. \u003cbr\u003e\nSonically this guitar delivers. The unamplified sound has a clear tone that really translates plugged in. Both pickups sound so wonderful, very classic Gretsch and the array of switches add to the tonal palette. Whatever the origins of the finish is, it is very old and blacklights like an original and is a super cool looking guitar to say the least.\u003cbr\u003e\nFrom the very  beginning, Leo had seen student models as a way to keep his instruments in players’ hands as they progressed. Released in June of 1956, the Duo Sonic went through a few changes alongside its stable mates and found favour with players as diverse as John McLaughlin, David Byrne, Patti Smith and of course Jimi Hendrix when he was backing the Isley Brothers.\u003cbr\u003e\nThis guitar is in nice condition. The three tone sunburst is almost entirely free of any damage. There are a few knocks and scuffs but nothing too substantial. \u003cbr\u003e\nThe neck too has been refinished at the same time. Interestingly the tuner ferrules have been painted over. The new decal looks correct under black light, matching the finish. The fretboard and frets are in fantastic shape, the neck date reads December 1958.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe plastics must have been changed when the guitar was refinished for what would have been the currently available items. They're in good condition. The hardware hardly shows the passing of time.\u003cbr\u003e\nElectrically everything is correct. Pots are dated week 25 of 1958.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe guitar comes with its correct hardshell case.\u003cbr\u003e\nEven though this is a short scale guitar (22.5”) and aimed at students, there is no doubt that these are well made instruments . The neck feels comfortable and easy to play, the no-frills nature of the electronics yields a classy tone. Fender’s history regarding alternative body woods is vague to say the least but there is no doubt that during this period they were experimenting with mahogany and korina, in all probability due to Leo Fender having access to some cheap stock.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe finish is quite beaten up but the colour is still vivid.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe neck (made of a lovely piece of birdseye maple), fretboard and frets are in great shape with the finish having worn into a comfortable surface. The neck date reads as April 63.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe plastics and hardware show the passing of time but have not been abused.\u003cbr\u003e\nElectrically everything looks correct. This example just oozes mojo. The sunburst looks great but it has been refinished as it would have originally been gold. It does seem that the body has been over sprayed at some stage. Apart from that there is very little wear to the top. The back of the 2 piece ‘pancake’ body shows some sign of use with some buckle rash evident.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe three piece mahogany neck (soon to be changed to maple in 1975) shows very little signs of wear. As with the body it has crazed. The fretboard is in great shape as are the frets with plenty of life left  in them.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe headstock, in the same way as the body, has a few marks. Interestingly a good indicator of the guitar's age is the fact that the gibson logo doesn't have a dot over the i which dates this guitar as an early 1970. The dot was reintroduced in late 1970 having been absent since late 1968.\u003cbr\u003e\nElectronically the pots have been changed but it still has a pair of Sprague ‘Black Beauty’ capacitors. The pickups are correct, the jack plate has been changed for a metal one.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe guitar comes with a hardshell case.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe unamplified tone has plenty of sustain, as you’d expect from a good Gibson. The mini humbuckers bring a brightness without being as muddy as could be the case with full size humbuckers of the same period.\u003cbr\u003e\nA stunning guitar that looks and sounds the part. Consequently they’re regarded as fairly rare, although that doesn’t necessarily mean that few were sold. A 10 watt amp powered by a pair of ECL86 output valves with a single ECC83 at the input, these often end up modified to 1974 specification due to both sharing the same chassis.\u003cbr\u003e\nThis amp is in good condition. Tolex is tear free, the grill cloth has faded a little but shows no signs of wear. The knobs have been changed though the originals are with the amp. Text on the control plate is mostly still present and there is no sign of corrosion. Cobwebs are included free of charge, we do not charge extra.\u003cbr\u003e\nInternally the amp has been recapped, pots changed and the valves are recently fitted. Transformers for both the power and output are correct. The older cable has been replaced, original included.\u003cbr\u003e\nBoth Celestion 10” speakers are correct and tear free. From research online we believe the cones are Pulsonic, famed for their softer and more fluid sound quality.\u003cbr\u003e\nThough sonically not quite the ‘Mini Bluesbreaker’ of its 18 watt 1974 relative, this amp certainly has that Marshall grunt when provoked with a chimey clean that’s more reminiscent of a vox.\u003cbr\u003e\nA well kept studio secret, there aren't many of these out there. This guitar is featured on page 319 of Bernie's hardback book 'Tales of Tone and Volume' a copy of which will be included with this sale.\u003cbr\u003e\nInitially conceived as a member of the Mandolin family alongside the F5 mandolin (as the popularity go Mandolin orchestras was waning), the L5’s enduring popularity was due in no small part to the great jazz guitarist Eddie Lang who pioneered the use of the guitar in the dance band rhythm sections, finding that the Gibson archtop could easily keep up with the rest of the band. Its elegant Cremona Brown finish and f holes gave the guitar a decidedly violin-like look and set a precedent for competitors and the company themselves that still exist to this day.\u003cbr\u003e\nThis is a superb example especially considering its over 80 years of age. The sunburst finish has a few marks and dings though none of this really detracts from the overall look of the instrument.\u003cbr\u003e\nPickguard is in good condition though it has started to gas. Its currently being kept away from the guitar to preserve the finish.  \u003cbr\u003e\nThe chunky C profile neck with a bound fretboard and parallelogram mother of pearl inlays feels instantly comfortable. The script logo headstock has the now iconic flowerpot inlay emblazoned upon it, framed by the continued binding. The Kluson sealfast tuners still work very well. There are a few patches of wear though this isn’t extensive. The frets have some life left in them.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe guitar comes with a Lifton hardshell case that, like the guitar, is in exceptional condition.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe L5’s reputation was built on being able to keep up with a horn section and this one is no exception. The ABR-1 is of the type fitted to Gibsons with vibrato systems. Plastics are correct.  \u003cbr\u003e\nElectrically the guitar has undergone some changes. The guitar is currently fitted with Gibson Humbuckers from 1980 and the harness has been replaced too. The guitar is still wired in stereo and the varitone is still functional. \u003cbr\u003e\nThe guitar comes with a period correct Gibson EB2\/12 string hardshell case.\u003cbr\u003e\nAll the touchstone tones are present here, the Gibson pickups delivering as you’d expect. The neck is very comfortable and the guitar is easy to play. The sound is authoritative without being too heavy in the lower midrange. The bridge pickup barks when encouraged whilst the neck pickup is all kinds of smooth without losing definition. The varitone, so often viewed as a handicap, yields quite a range of pleasing tones. \u003cbr\u003e\nSometimes only an ES-345 will do. The bracket has been replaced with a modern one as the original (included with the sale) had fatigued to a point that it wasn't working correctly.\u003cbr\u003e\nPlastics have survived well too, pickguard is straight and the pickup covers look good too.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe guitar comes with a correct 4 latch Lifton case with the classic pink lining and doesn’t it look stunning as a back drop for this beautiful guitar…\u003cbr\u003e\nThe most surprising thing about these guitars is their versatility. Even with the hollow design, the guitar can withstand a surprising amount of gain before feedback becomes impossible. The tailpiece seems to play a big part in the tone. We’ve conducted experiments (on a different guitar of the same model) whereby we swapped the tailpiece from the trapeze found here to a rosewood bridge and found that the one piece trapeze tailpiece produces far more sustain and a better string transfer to the top of the guitar. In effect what you get here is akin to a hollowbody Goldtop Les Paul, the combination of P90 pickups and heavier tailpiece.\u003cbr\u003e\nBoth pickups are well balanced. The neck brings a mellow warmth whilst the bridge pickup has plenty of bite without veering into harshness. Retaining the vibrant hues, particularly the red, this is an excellent example of early 60s sunburst finish.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe neck is in great shape and feels very comfortable. The fretboard shows no real sign of wear and the original frets have plenty of life left in them. The neck date is February 1962 and would have been amongst some of the first Jaguars to leave the factory. \u003cbr\u003e\nThe original tortoiseshell pickguard hasn't shrunk very much and is in fantastic condition. Noteworthy is the fewer number of screws holding the pickguard, a feature of very early Jaguars as is the slot head pickup adjusting screws.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe hardware is in great shape too.\u003cbr\u003e\nElectronically everything is correct. There is one solder joint that had to be remade as the wire to the volume pot had broken when we opened the control cavity. Skip forward to 21:25 if you want to see this (video below).\u003cbr\u003e\nWhat’s more, this is one of the few that have never been converted to a Telecaster hence no other screw holes are visible in the neck pickup cavity and all original guard. Pretty rare to see that. Bridge is superb sounding top loader and yes, it does sound different to a bottom feeder in a very nice way - see the video!\u003cbr\u003e\nOriginal frets are in amazing shape, plays real well and guitar sounds classic with a very strong pickup with plenty of tonal variety that begs the question why they even bothered to put another one in there… All original solder with not a single joint disturbed.\u003cbr\u003e\nAll parts are correct, body is dated 4-59 and as is right for the period, there is no neck date and serial number is 39024. All finish on neck and body is original with no touch ups or over spray anywhere. Finish has faded to almost like a butterscotch hue reminiscent of the black guard era.\u003cbr\u003e\nCase is just like the guitar in excellent  condition. It is the correct and relatively rare tweed with orange lining with everything working. Finished off with an elongated pickguard and a maple cap or rosewood neck, the Telecaster Thinline became one of Roger’s most enduring legacies.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe guitar is in great condition. There are a few knocks and the lacquer has cracked in places (due to the body flexing and the lacquer not) but on a whole it's in great shape. The lacquer is in good shape.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe plastics like the body are in good condition. Pearloid can be quite a divisive material but it seems to suit the thinline so well.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe hardware is in good condition and free of too much corrosion and wear.\u003cbr\u003e\nElectronically some of the wiring has been corrected as it came to us with having been repaired at some stage. The pot dates are week 31 of 1966. Both pickups look to be correct.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe guitar comes with a hardshell case\u003cbr\u003e\nThe chambering of the body adds some air to theguitar's tone whilst retaining those telecaster tonal characteristics. This is more noticeable on the neck pickup.
