We're big fans of this era pickup as they tend to give quite a weighty tone that is a little thicker than earlier versions. This guitar is no exception, with a tone that packs a punch with some bell like low mids and rounded top end sparkle.
All CTS pot source codes date to the 14th week of '65 and wiring a solder appears intact. In 1958, the Junior underwent a major change when Gibson switched to a double cutaway body, making this example among the very last of the original single-cut incarnation.
This guitar shows a vibrant Sunburst finish over its solid mahogany body and neck, paired with a rosewood fingerboard. The sunburst remains rich and striking with very little fade, complemented by attractive lacquer checking across the surface. Overall condition is excellent, with only minor dings, light buckle wear on the back, and small edge chips to the headstock. The silkscreen logo is intact, the serial number remains bold, and the guitar retains a clean, authentic look throughout. Importantly, it is completely original with no modifications or changed parts, a rarity for a working instrument of this vintage.
The big neck profile is classic 1958 - full and substantial in the hand, but offering a natural supportiveness that makes it as comfortable as it is solid. Tonally, the single P-90 pickup delivers the raw, punchy and direct voice that made the Junior a legend, full of bite when pushed but wonderfully responsive to the player’s touch. Spearheading the custom shop at Gretsch for many years now, he is highly regarded amongst the guitar building community and players alike for his craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Junior Bo Huff grew up pinstriping cars and recently took over the running of his father’s, Bo Huff, shop in Utah. Bo Huff is legendary amongst the hot rod community with Junior carrying on the fine tradition.
This guitar is in New Old Stock, unsold condition. The cherry finish is in fact the top colour from candy apple red without the metallic undercoat. This, combined with the rare mahogany body makes for quite a combination. These woods included Mahogany and African Limba, also known as Korina. Though not common, these do come up from time to time and this is one of them. This one came to us from South Africa where it had been with the same owner (pictured) since new.
It's a fine example. The original and only owner of this amazing guitar bought it from C. Bothners & Sons Ltd, in Johannesburg SA, in 1964. He said it was not especially ordered, it was just hanging in the store and he had no idea it was one of the rare Korina examples and neither did the shop. The finish has faded and worn in places but is in otherwise great condition. You can see the grain of the korina body through where the finish has chipped and in the neck pocket.
The neck, dated May 1964, is great too. This example just oozes mojo. The sunburst looks great but it has been refinished as it would have originally been gold. It does seem that the body has been over sprayed at some stage. Apart from that there is very little wear to the top. The back of the 2 piece ‘pancake’ body shows some sign of use with some buckle rash evident.
The three piece mahogany neck (soon to be changed to maple in 1975) shows very little signs of wear. Included is a dedication to the mom who bought this guitar for her son who owned it for most of its life.
The neck (dated January 1963) has worn wonderfully and is the desirable fuller feeling neck profile you only get during 1963 to early 1964. The frets have plenty of life left in them and the fretboard is in good shape, showing some signs of wear.
The nitrate pickguard is in good condition and thankfully there has been no extra routing inside. The other plastic parts are in great shape.
The hardware is in good condition with some of the usual corrosion which does not affect performance of course.
Electronically, everything is as expected. The all controls date to week 6 of 1963. The neck pickup is correct original 1963 black bottom pickup though when we received the guitar it had an early 80s pickup in there. You would never have known this if we hadn't had told you! All pickup windings are original and very strong and balanced.
The ground lead on the neck pickup has been altered and patched with heatshrink and the solder joints on the back of the volume control have been reheated.
Guitar comes with its correct hardshell case.
Sonically, this guitar delivers those wonderful 60’s black bottom Strat tones built on the bedrock of a spry acoustic sound.
