An excellent example of Gibson heritage, the guitar is testament to the quality of the high-end instruments Gibson was producing as the post-war era met the 1950’s.Introduced in 1922 and developed by Lloyd Loar the L-5 was the first guitar by any manufacturer to combine a carved top and back, f-holes, an adjustable truss rod and a neck that joined the body at the 14th fret. Part of the Master Model series of instruments the L-5 would remain the flagship guitar for Gibson until the release of the Super 400 in 1935. Early examples had a 16-inch body with the neck joining at the 14th fret, constructed from two sections of maple with a dark center seam, the "Snake head" headstock design was bound and inlaid with a diagonal "The Gibson" logo and Gibson's iconic flowerpot motif in pearl. The finest Spruce was reserved for the soundboard and the backs and sides were a mixture of Maple and Birch. As a high end, professional grade instrument the L-5 would undergo many changes in the following years, constantly evolving as players' needs necessitated evolving from the original 16-inch wide, non-cutaway design, through to the 17-inch "Advanced" model in 1934 to the use of the longer 25-½ inch scale length that became a permanent feature in 1938, on to the Venetian cutaway equipped L-5 Premier in 1939 and finally the L-5 went electric with L-5CES in 1951. Shipped in 1949, this example would have been one of the earlier L-5's to bear the L-5C title with the evolution from L-5 Premier happening in 1948. Featuring a 17” body with uniformly grained Spruce top, large bound F holes and 5-ply edge binding, figured curly Maple back, rims and neck. Internally as expected the guitar has parallel spruce top braces. The two piece Maple neck has a dark center lamination and unusually for an L5 a bound Rosewood fingerboard. It was during this period that Gibson suffered an Ebony shortage and other examples of Rosewood L-5s can be seen in 1948 and 1949. The neck otherwise follows Gibsons post-war convention with a bound headstock that features an intricately inlayed pearl flowerpot inlay and large Gibson script logo that had recently been discontinued and replaced by the then-new, now-familiar modern block logo on some models. The fingerboard is inlayed with large Pearl block inlays. The tuners are gold-plated Kluson Sealfasts with translucent celluloid Keystone buttons, a feature in place since 1940. The tailpiece is the non-hinged adjustable L-5 Vari-Tone tailpiece found on the L-5 from 1939. Gibson's records show only 23 sunburst L-5C shipped in 1949. The guitars serial number - A-3483 places the instruments production into the later part of the year. The original 5-ply cellulose tortoise pickguard, although supplied with the guitar has 'off-gassed' so the guitar comes with an excellent reproduction pickguard from Paul Fox at Fox Guitars fitted to the original bracket. The guitar is in great condition structurally and cosmetically, it plays very well with good geometry and decent height to the dressed frets. The paper thin finish shows signs of use with dings, dents and scrapes throughout but nothing to detract from the appearance of a near 75 year old guitar. The finish has aged to a wonderful amber hue and the gold hardware has softened most notably to the tailpiece. The fast, slim neck shows wear to the lacquer from use, with a contemporary feeling oval profile it has a nut width of 43.09 and a 1st fret depth of 22.97mm. The guitar has a lively percussive voice, well balanced and with plenty of presence it has a clear, crisp and dry tone equally suited for rhythm as well as melody lines. It made its first appearance in 1937 initially called the Super Jumbo, changing early to the Super Jumbo 200. The retail price was $200 with very few examples shipped, the ledgers show that only 25 left the factory in 1938. Early pre-war examples featured rosewood back and sides. Production of the Super Jumbo 200 ceased during the Second World War as Gibson scaled down manufacture and upon its re-release in 1947 the specification had changed mainly to the back and sides changing from Rosewood to figured Maple with Natural finish becoming an option in 1948.
Constantly evolving the 1950’s would see the SJ-200 body depth increase to 4 7/8” in 1952 and in 1955 the model name was shortened to J-200. By 1961 the J-200 would receive a gold Tune-o-matic adjustable bridge with a newly designed ‘closed’ moustache bridge and 1963 would see the introduction of a five piece laminated neck.
This fantastic guitar dates to 1963 and is one of only 163 shipped that year. It features a straight grain Sitka spruce top, the Maple back and sides are highly figured as is the wood selected for the five piece maple neck. The bound ‘stinger’ headstock features a pearl inlayed Gibson Logo and Crown inlay. The bound Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard is inlayed with Pearl Crest position markers and the Pearl inlayed Rosewood bridge has had the ABR-1 replaced with a well made rosewood fillet with traditional saddle. Tuners are gold plated Kluson Wafflebacks.
The original Sunburst finish looks great, there is wear throughout but nothing to detract from the guitars overall appearance and if anything adds to the guitars cool factor. There is one minor area of DIY touch up on the bass side of the neck by the first fret.
The guitar feels great in use, the neck has the perfect slim to medium early 60’s profile with a depth at the first fret of 20.8mm increasing to 23.37mm at the 7th fret. The nut has a width of 42.8mm. The guitar sounds excellent, a great singer- strummer but also sweet when fingerpicked or flat picked. This one has a bigger voice than some J-200 can especially in the low end. The Stratocaster pickup works surprisingly well offering an alternative to the standard Acoustic pickup options. We think the addition is cool, the guitar was adapted for use with no fear of affecting its value but if the future owner wanted the mod remedied its a cosmetic repair most luthiers would be able to fix and achieve a great result.
The guitar plays well in the first position it is worth advising that the action does increase to just over 3.5mm at the 12th fret and depending on the next owners preference a neck re-set may want to be considered.
The guitar comes with a well fitted modern case.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0917/7258/4275/files/dsc00614_e9182958-1b2a-487c-955f-9806aab89e2c.jpg?v=1762539186
1958-martin-d-28-hsc
1958 Martin D-28 + HSC

A very cool player and an even better sounding D-28 from 1958. It's no surprise this guitar has been played a lot throughout it's life and we feel it looks and sounds all the better for it. A Country & Western, Bluegrass, Folk heavyweight the D-28 model was Martin's highest priced, largest sized, best offering during this period; the higher spec more elaborate models having been discontinued during the war and not yet brought back into production. The D-28 was guitar of choice for many high profile musicians earning it's status as a Country & Western, bluegrass and folk staple, and resulting in a large waiting list as demand outstripped production.
The tone is rich, warm, dry, woody and very well balanced. The Rosewood ensures a very well rounded, warm lower end, the highs are sparkly, distinct and balanced, and the mids are slightly scooped whilst retaining some punch. There's a fair amount of headroom, and the projection is excellent. It's easy to see why this guitar has clearly been used extensively throughout it's life. In both sound and feel this is definitely one of the nicer D-28's we've had.
The neck has a very playable soft 'V' profile, the lacquer having worn from decades of use resulting in a very tactile, smooth feel in the hand. It's a very comfortable guitar to play, with plenty of height to the non-original frets. The action is spot on with good playability up the neck, whether you're chord/rhythm playing, lead playing or fingerpicking. The neck doesn't appear to have been reset and the saddle has only a small amount of height remaining. The bridge is a short saddle Rosewood replacement which has been bolted and dowelled with pearl dots.
Condition wise there are numerous scratches and dings to the whole guitar and some minor tarnishing to the finish on the back. There are two visible, superficial cracks on the back that don't penetrate the wood and some of the braces have been re-glued. All three shared a hand-carved, round-soundhole top, flat back, and a 25.4" scale length—rooted more in Martin's flattop heritage than the louder, punchier f-hole designs that were quickly defining the archtop market.
At 15" across the lower bout, with a body depth ranging from 3 3/8" to 4 1/8"—the C-2 was modestly sized for an archtop. Ours is stamped #33, though it’s widely believed that Martin never actually completed the full run, making these one of the hardest modern Martin editions to track down. Presented here in excellent condition and complete with its original hard case, it’s a fine example of this elusive model.
The Stauffer name reaches back to the very roots of Martin history. Johann Georg Stauffer was a renowned Viennese luthier of the early 19th century, famous for his scroll-style headstocks and innovative designs. Christian Frederick Martin trained in Vienna and absorbed much of Stauffer’s influence before founding his own company in the United States. With this model, Martin paid tribute to that connection, adopting the distinctive Stauffer scroll headstock and finely appointed Style-40 ornamentation to honour their founder’s European lineage.
The 00-40 format is a 12-fret, grand concert-sized guitar, here built with a solid spruce top and East Indian rosewood back and sides. Scalloped X-bracing keeps the build light and responsive, while the ebony fingerboard and bridge add both durability and tonal focus. The guitar is richly bound, with snowflake inlays, ivoroid trim and a decorative backstrip, all consistent with Martin’s higher-end styles. The slotted “Stauffer-style” headstock carries six tuners in line on a single plate, a striking and unusual touch that sets this model apart visually as well as historically.
Playability is excellent thanks to the comfortable 12-fret neck and short 24.9" scale length, making it an especially inviting instrument for fingerstyle playing. Tonally it delivers exactly what you’d expect from a rosewood 00: a sweet, balanced voice with clarity across the registers and an immediacy that responds beautifully to a lighter touch.
As one of only a handful of Stauffer 00-40s known to exist, this guitar represents a fascinating point where Martin’s past and present meet. This example, serial number 292 with factory order number 1028, features the distinctive small sunburst Spruce top paired with Mahogany back and sides. It’s a classic KG-11 spec with bound top and unbound back, ladder bracing, solid kerfing, dot fingerboard markers and the correct three-on-a-plate tuners with black buttons. Everything here is original down to the Ebony nut and what appear to be the factory frets - a rare survivor from a period when these guitars were inexpensive working instruments, often played hard and seldom preserved.
Condition is remarkable for its age. The finish retains a strong burst with only light pick wear from the lack of a guard, the geometry is good with saddle height remaining for further adjustments in the future. The neck shows just a touch of relief and overall it plays very well for an instrument of this age. The tuners are slightly stiff but function as intended, the frets are low but quite usable, and overall this is one of the cleanest KG-11s you’re likely to find. At just 1.25 kg it’s feather-light in the hands.
In terms of playability, this guitar has a wonderful big V-profile neck with a 45mm nut great for fingerstyle players who like a bit of room for the left hand. Alignment is good with room at the saddle for further tweaks if desired, and up the neck it remains very playable. Tonally it has the dry, jangly character these ladder-braced Kalamazoos are loved for, with a sweet highs, an 'earthy' midrange and a quick, direct response that works beautifully for blues, ragtime and roots styles.
The KG-11 sits in a fascinating chapter of American guitar history. Introduced by Gibson under the Kalamazoo brand as an affordable alternative during the Depression, these guitars were marketed as no-frills but well-made instruments. The smaller body shape of the KG-11, with its tight waist and compact outline, gave it a distinctive look compared to the KG-14 and other contemporaries. Despite being budget guitars, they were built with solid woods and excellent craftsmanship, making them far more enduring than many competitors of the era. Today, they’re prized not only for their unique tone but also for their association with a time when music was a solace in hard times. As part of it's original spec, it features a 12-fret neck join with the bridge positioned further down the body compared to a typical LG-2. This shift has a noticeable impact on the way the guitar responds, placing the soundhole closer to the centre of the string’s vibration. The result is a slightly different tonal character, with increased volume, rich overtones and a lively, open response that really helps it project.
