What do you do with your polymethyl methacrylate? Dan Armstrong took huge lumps of it and shaped it into guitars…

Brought in to spearhead Ampeg’s foray into guitar building in 1968, Armstong, Matt Umanov and Bill Lawrence designed and built one of the late 60’s most iconic and arguably idiosyncratic guitars, choosing Lucite (one of the trade names for PMMA) as it was  “...hard and consistent, and you don’t have to worry about grain”  

With interchangeable pickups, 24.75” scale and distinctive clear body, they made an instant impression on Keith Richards who got behind them from the beginning, later seen in the hands of artist such as Randy California, Lou Reed and Arthur Lee. 

Though the initial run only lasted into 1971, the cost of manufacturing and the general apathy displayed by the guitar buying public halting production, several reissues have been produced in recent times, this one being a fine example from 2006.

The guitar is in great shape, the lucite body shows no signs of ware, in fact there doesnt seem to be a mark on it.

The frets and fretboard are in excellent shape as is the headstock.

The masonite pickguard still has the decal with no sign of wear.

The hardware shows no real signs of corrosion.

Electronically there has been some solder reflowed and when we received it the switch had taken a  knock and disconnected itself from the tone control. This has all been rectified andis working correctly.

The guitar comes with its correct Ampeg hardshell case 

You just don’t get to play one of these often. A solid rock guitar sound, the ability to swap out the pickups really adds to the flexibility and though it's a bridge pickup only, there is plenty of control over the tone.
