2004 Gibson Nick Lucas Historic Reissue + OHSC
Gibson's tribute to one of the most iconic instruments in the company's history, and their first artist model named after the influential guitarist and "crooning troubadour," Nick Lucas. First introduced in the late 1920s as a top of the range model in Gibson's catalogue, the original/earliest version Nick Lucas model retailed for $125 in 1927. Specs changed over the next few years, the biggest being a change to the body shape in 1929 from the more rounded bottom end to a flatter bottom, larger instrument with increased depth, width and a longer 24.75" scale.
This 2004 version, part of Gibson’s Historic line made in Bozeman, Montana was a reimagining of the last incarnation Nick Lucas model from 1934 featuring Maple back and sides, 24.75" scale, 14-fret neck with a flat back body and flat (non pyramid) Rosewood bridge. The Maple back and sides are beautifully figured displaying a really nice, almost fiddleback flame, with all sides finish in an attractive dark sunburst. Combined with the tight grained Spruce top the quality of tonewoods used on this guitar is evident, and it really shows in the sound and tonal qualities.
Condition wise it has 2 large lacquer cracks to the Maple bass side. Otherwise it's in excellent condition and plays well with height remaining on the bridge for additional adjustment.
Tonally the Maple and increased body depth gives and deeper more 'tubby' bass response that remains tight. The high's are sparkly and the mids are tight and balanced. Overall a wonderful sounding instrument, complete with original hard case.
