From the first few months of production we have this 1960 Fender Stack knob Jazz Bass

Wishing to improve on the Precision Bass’ success and drawing on the stylings of the Jazzmaster, Leo designed the Jazz Bass as a more refined instrument. Contouring the offset body to make it more comfortable to play when seated and introducing a bridge pickup that further enhanced the the tonal palette, it soon joined its fellow stable mates as a regular feature of stages all over the world.

This bass just oozes mojo. Its worn in all the right places including some amazing wear on the back that just shouts of many hours of playing. The red has faded, common problem with these early three tone finishes, but has left a very pleasing finish which definitely adds to the overall look. The pickguard is missing a comer on the bottom horn and has shrunk a little around the pickup but is otherwise in good shape.

The slab-board neck, dated 09 60, is well worn all along its length, the satin finish very pleasing in the hand. The fretboard itself is in very good condition, the Brazilian rosewood has a wonderfully dark hue. The frets have good life left in them.

The hardware is in good condition, showing no real signs of corrosion even though it seems that the bass has been played mainly with the covers on. As is so often the case with these guitars, the mutes are missing. But who needs these…?

Electronically things seem correct with no signs of disturbance to the solder joints and the pot dates read week 25 of 1960.

The bass comes with its correct Brown Tolex case.

This bass is a joy to play. Its evidently been well cared for and regularly serviced. The neck and fretboard are a joy and feel more like a new instrument. more than likely due to a lifetime of flat wounds, than a 60 year old guitar. The stacked knobs facilitate a wide palette of tonal options. A true classic.

This writer feels that a sunburst Fenders always looks better with some light wear and was not disappointed with this bass on opening the case for the first time. Married to a wonderfully neck and that majestic tone, this bass is surely a must for any Jazz Bass connoisseur.
